Inspiration
The inspiration for this project was the "Save the Salamanders" events in the northeastern United States, organized to prevent salamanders from being hit by cars at night when attempting to cross roads. The goal is a project to improve community awareness of wildlife events.
What it does
The website provides a filterable list of wildlife events with a short blurb, image, and link to outside sources. There is also a map to display events on a global scale at different months and years. This allows users to see upcoming wildlife events in their area, learn about wildlife globally, and quickly find out if there's anything they can do to promote biodiversity.
How we built it
We built it in VisualStudio with a combination of HTML, CSS, SQLite, and some JavaScript for the website and Python (using plotly) for the map.
Challenges we ran into
We had major challenges with filtering the database according to user input in SQLite and using public sourced databases to generate a labelled map.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're pretty proud of what we were able to produce, and the idea in general.
What we learned
We learned a lot about website development, the potential of GIS software, and the amount of effort that goes into producing a completed coding project.
What's next for Save the Salamanders - Improving Wildlife Event Awareness
Finishing the website and the map! Then improving the database.
