Inspiration

When we saw the Community category for the hackathon, we thought about different ways we could help our community. We decided that the environment is everyone's community and that it would be great to teach children from a young age to make sustainable choices.

What it does

Our game includes three scenarios: a park, a beach, and a classroom. Each scenario has three items, two of which are not good for the planet. The user hovers over each picture and sees whether they made the correct choice of not.

How we built it

We used Figma, HTML, CSS, and Gimp.

Challenges we ran into

We initially planned on doing our project in Java since that's what we are all most familiar with. We soon realized we should take a different approach. It was tricky having one member that was 7 hours ahead of us, so communication was at times difficult. Our first attempt did not work in the way we intended so we had to start from scratch late afternoon on Saturday!

Accomplishments

that we're proud of We are proud that we made a prototype in such a short time that shows the idea of what we wanted to do. We are proud of the great design work, and of how we made use of the web authoring skills that we learned in the past year. It was the first hackathon for Jia and Adam and only the second for Alexandra, so we are proud of what we did as beginners. Most of all it really felt like a collaboration, with each member contributing both to the ideas, design, and coding.

What we learned

We learned that communication among team members is paramount, about ideas, work assignments, and personal schedules. It is important to delegate clearly. We learned how to use Figma and learned new code in HTML and CSS.

What's next for Save the Planet

We will make the transitions from scene to scene smoother. We will make a version for older kids where you have to get the answers right before moving on to the next page and where you can earn points (or plants :)). We will add some sound effects and background music. We will add a page that explains sustainability in a way to make kids excited about making choices that are good for our planet.
