Inspiration

This project was inspired to advocate for the unspoken voices that cannot be heard. Our four-legged friends aren’t able to have the capability to protest and voice for their causes. Living a life in silence can be painful, so ultimately, the team collectively choosing to assist and aid in the lives of pet’s euthanasia had been unanimous.

What it does

Joining the compassionate initiative dedicated to hindering a stopping pets facing euthanasia and offering them a second chance to those who deserve it the most. Every year, the copious numbers of shelter euthanasia have been on an unfortunate steady incline due to overpopulation, lack of resources, and limited space in shelters. With innocent lives facing their uncertain fate each day without intervention, the team’s project lies in the compassion of offering them a second chance at life through educational awareness and activation campaigns.

How we built it

Kickstarting off the project, we began with creating a Figma design outline to brainstorm how we would like our website to appear to the general user. After finalizing our website appearance, we created an HTML script along with a CSS script to format the appearance of our page. Additionally, we created a Javascript file to edit the interactiveness of the website.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges that we ran into during this project was creating the Javascript to display the information on the interactive map to be running as we had intended. We had run into consistent problems with troubleshooting for the information to be displayed correctly and had to consistently work on ways to debug the problem. We also had a hard time with formatting the layout of the website because sections would sometimes overlap with one another and it would ruin the flow of the website. After some editing of the HTML and CSS files, we were able to resolve our issues.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The most relieving accomplishment that we are proud of was getting the interactive map to run as we had originally intended. Through the trials and errors it took, we are proud of how the map functions. Overall, we are proud of how much we have accomplished as a team in creating the project for this hackathon. We have learned how to accommodate our schedules and utilized great communication skills to get our project done despite our differences in locations and time zones.

What we learned

Our research into the project shined a light on the recent statistics of more pet euthanasia being performed over the years since the rise of the pandemic. With a heavy heart and an initiative to do good, the team created a Save the Animals website to raise awareness about addressing the concerns and ways to donate and reduce the number of pets at risk of euthanasia. Over our research, we have learned more about the numbers of euthanasia happening in every 50 states and brought awareness to local shelters within each community that visitors can visit and donate to.

What's next for Save the Animals!

If time permits, we would love to finish the map to include more data for the rest of the States to give more users information on their respective states. Also, have an interactive form to find local organizations to donate to.
