Inspiration
We were inspired by the alarming decline of wildlife populations around the world. There are many endangered species that are unknown to the general public. People want to help, but don’t know where to start. Our goal was to create a platform that makes conservation accessible, allowing anyone to connect directly with NGOs and non-profits to protect species and their habitats.
What it does
Save Our Species allows users to explore endangered animals by their endangerment level, from Vulnerable to Extinct in the Wild. Users can read key facts about each species, including the threats they face and ongoing conservation efforts. The platform provides direct donation links to NGO and nonprofits so people can contribute to protecting habitats and species.
How we built it
We built the platform using modern web technologies, primarily HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, to create a responsive and interactive website. The front-end features animal cards and filtering options, making it easy and engaging for users to explore species. The back-end organizes species information, endangerment levels, and verified NGO donation links.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was collecting accurate, up-to-date data on endangered species and their habitats. Another was ensuring that donations went only to verified and trustworthy NGOs. Additionally, we worked hard to make the website visually appealing while keeping educational content readable. Balancing engagement and accuracy required careful planning and testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully created a platform that connects users directly to wildlife conservation projects. Our database now features over 9 species with clear, actionable information. The website is user-friendly, educational, and encourages people to donate or take action. We also raised awareness for lesser-known species like the Saola and Socorro Dove. Overall, the platform bridges the gap between public interest and meaningful conservation efforts.
What we learned
We learned that effective conservation requires both awareness and action. Users respond best to concise, engaging information paired with clear calls-to-action. Technology can make a tangible difference by connecting people to global wildlife preservation efforts. Presenting accurate data in an ethical and readable way helps build trust with users. We also discovered that small design choices can greatly influence engagement and impact. On the technical side, we gained valuable experience and improved our skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript while building the website.
What's next for Save Our Species
we plan to expand our species database to include animals from all continents. We want to add interactive features like virtual wildlife tours and adoption programs. We would also aim to use API keys to make a bigger dataset, with thousands of animals. Another exciting feature we’d like to add is the ability to send donors a real, live photo of an animal they helped support with their donation. Overall, we aim to make conservation more engaging, accessible, and impactful for everyone.
