Inspiration

The inspiration for Save My Plant! came from watching countless houseplant owners struggle with mysterious spots, wilting leaves, and tiny pests that seemed impossible to identify.

What it does

Save My Plant! is an AI-powered web application that instantly identifies common houseplant pests from user-uploaded photos. After detecting pests like spider mites, aphids, or fungus gnats, the site provides tailored treatment recommendations and preventative care tips.

How we built it

We built Save My Plant! using a combination of HTML, JavaScript, and Python (Flask). The core of our system is an image recognition model trained on about a hundred plant pest photos.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was sourcing high-quality, labeled images of plant pests for model training. Many pests look similar, and lighting or leaf damage can confuse even robust AI models

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of building a functional prototype that accurately identifies multiple common pests and provides useful, science-backed solutions.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned the importance of high-quality data in AI development and the challenges of deploying models in real-world settings.

What's next for Save My Plant!

Next, we plan to expand our pest database and improve model accuracy by crowdsourcing user-submitted images.
