Inspiration

Six months ago, my grandfather collapsed, and I found myself in a state of panic and confusion, unsure of what steps to take. Performing CPR was challenging because it required both hands, making it impossible to use my smartphone for guidance. This experience inspired me to create a solution that utilizes AR glasses to make CPR accessible to everyone, providing crucial step-by-step instructions when they’re needed most.

What it does

"Save My Grandpa" is an augmented reality (AR) guide for performing CPR. It visually guides the user through each CPR step, from checking safety and consciousness to positioning hands and keeping a steady rhythm. The AR interface ensures users can keep both hands free for CPR while receiving clear, timely instructions directly in their field of view.

How we built it

We developed this AR application with interactive features that respond to user actions, using Spectacles as the primary interface. The app leverages AR capabilities to display on-screen guidance, removing the need for a handheld device. The workflow is structured to be intuitive and hands-free, ensuring accessibility during emergencies.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was creating an intuitive, hands-free experience that can guide users effectively in high-stress situations. We also faced technical limitations with AR glasses and sensor integration for real-time feedback, which required innovative solutions to ensure the app remains responsive.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have created an accessible tool that empowers users to provide life-saving assistance even in panicked situations. The app’s interactive guide simplifies CPR, making it easier for anyone to perform with confidence.

What we learned

We learned the importance of designing for simplicity and clarity, especially in emergency contexts where stress levels are high. Working on this project deepened our understanding of integrating AR technology with practical, life-saving applications.

What's next for Save My Grandpa

Next, we plan to expand functionality by integrating vital sign monitoring through rPPG (remote photoplethysmography) and enabling emergency calls via Spectacles. Our goal is to make "Save My Grandpa" a comprehensive tool that empowers people to act quickly and confidently in emergencies.
