Inspiration

Climate change is a major problem facing the world presently with many countries, including Nigeria, already experiencing its adverse effects. People are the reason for climate change and are affected by it. In Nigeria, however, climate change is sparingly discussed; it is often viewed as a myth or an end-time sign and taken with levity. This poses a major challenge in reducing the impact of climate change on the nation. To encourage climate action, people need to be aware of the impact of climate change and the reason for climate action. Save Earth was created to address the problem by leveraging mobile app development.

What it does

Save Earth is a mobile app designed to improve climate change awareness and action in Nigeria. It is a one-of-a-kind app climate change app with a focus on climate literacy. Users have access to engaging climate change lessons with climate actions that users can participate in. The app also has a community feature to promote collaborative climate action and positive 'peer pressure.' This also comes with a petition feature that allows users to create and sign climate change-related petitions. Additionally, a feed feature that displays storytelling on climate change to further promote climate action. Finally, Save Earth has a feature that connects users to opportunities to scale their climate action. Save Earth helps users learn about climate change and ways to take action.

How we built it

The app was built using MIT's App Inventor. We plan on using Javascript and Ionic for the development of a version to launch on the Google Play store and App Store as the current version of our app only serves Android devices.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was definitely bugs in the code. Fortunately, YouTube was a handy resource for identifying the bugs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of being able to finish up the app considering the research, information, and efforts that went into building the app. We are also proud of the positive feedback we have received from potential users.

What we learned

The app development process reinforced coding concepts as well as project management.

What's next for Save Earth

We would begin the implementation of business, and education features to scale climate literacy to businesses and schools. In the future, we would continue to improve our app's features and delivery and scale our operations to serve more people. We also plan on working on different translations of our app to increase accessibility.
