Inspiration
Every day, bakeries throw away trays of perfectly good bread, pastries, and desserts—not because they’re unsafe, but because they’re hours away from expiration. Meanwhile, customers struggle with rising food prices, and communities face growing concerns about sustainability. We saw an opportunity to bridge these gaps.
Food waste isn’t just an environmental issue; it’s an economic and social one. When small businesses can recoup value from surplus goods and customers gain affordable access to fresh food, everyone benefits. Our team wanted to build a tool that empowers local bakeries to reduce waste, increase revenue, and strengthen community ties—all through a simple, intuitive platform.
What it does
Our web app helps bakeries list their almost‑expiring baked goods at discounted prices, making it easy for customers to discover deals while preventing food from ending up in landfills. It’s a win for the planet, a win for small businesses, and a win for anyone who loves a good pastry.
Our platform connects bakeries with nearby customers looking for discounted, same‑day baked goods. Through a clean, conversational interface, bakeries can:
-List surplus items with photos, quantities, and expiration windows
-Set dynamic discounts based on urgency
-Notify local customers when deals go live
-Track waste reduction and revenue recapture over time
Customers can browse nearby bakeries, reserve items, and pick them up before closing time. The app also highlights environmental impact metrics—like pounds of food saved—to reinforce sustainable habits.
How we built it
We built the platform using a modern, lightweight web stack designed for speed, clarity, and scalability:
-TypeScript + JSX for strongly typed, maintainable UI logic
-React as the core framework for building dynamic, component‑driven interfaces
-react‑dom for efficient rendering and hydration
-Leaflet maps for an interactive, geo‑aware bakery discovery experience
-Vercel hosting for fast global deployment and seamless CI/CD
Challenges we ran into
-Designing a fair, transparent discount model that works for both bakeries and customers
-Integrating map‑based discovery while keeping the UI lightweight
-Creating a UX that feels welcoming to both tech‑savvy and traditional bakery owners
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-A polished, intuitive interface that makes sustainability feel warm and accessible
-A seamless bakery dashboard that even non‑technical users can navigate
-A working reservation and pickup flow that reduces friction for customers
-A mission that resonates with local businesses and sustainability advocates alike
What we learned
-How to build a full MVP using TypeScript, React, and modern deployment workflows
-How to design systems that support small business operations
-How to translate sustainability goals into practical, trackable features
-How to collaborate across design, engineering, and community research
