Inspiration
Our inspiration for our project came from how university students usually stay focused on their monitors without noticing that their posture is poor. Majors like computer science, mathematics, and physics are mostly affected. Our goal is to address the growing health impact only caused by prolonged poor posture in front of monitors.
What it does
This website helps university student maintain proper posture while using their monitors by tracking their sitting position through their camera while also promoting healthy habits for fellow students. Some features of the website are that it reminds them to take breaks such as for stretching, resting for the eyes, and drinking water. Students can receive guidance from our personalized AI, which explains on how the long-term effects of poor posture can affect one's health and provides tips and tricks on how to improve their posture. A way for student to be engaged is with a friendly competition, a system that allow student to compete on leaderboards, in which makes motivation and a supportive environment among friends and fellow university students.
How we built it
We built the project by first structuring the classes or method within the main file, understanding how each component work with one another. Next, we get the roles of the backend and frontend development of the main. While we did used Codex to guide us in developing the code structure which does include posture capturing and AI integration, most of the project was implement by our team. Finally, we modified the user interface to make it visually spectacular and user-friendly.
Challenges we ran into
There were some challenges that we have faced during this hackathon, which does include merging the backend and frontend, which does require extremely careful coordination to ensure that all components of the website work together smoothly. Another obstacle was the integration of the AI, as it sometimes spits out unexpected outputs or repeats its prompts instead of giving the actual responses that it should.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Some accomplishments we are proud of include successfully integrating the AI into our website, which was a complex and time-consuming task, and now it provides personalized feedback based on the data it collects from the students. We are also proud of getting the posture-capturing feature to work, as this is our main component of our website. Its successful implementation demonstrates the team's talent and hard work.
What we learned
Some things we have learned from our time in this hackathon are how to implement AI into a website and having a better understanding of AI integration and its applications. We also developed a better understanding of motion-capture technology; seeing firsthand how it can improve daily lives and learning how it works is a joy for all of us. Moreover, we gained a deep understanding of frontend and backend development, including how a team should coordinate effectively and how both ends are equally important. We also realized the value of AI tools such as Codex, which can provide guidance and assistance for troubleshooting.
What's next for Sauron
I believe that this website is a pathway of opening a approach to overall student health and productivity, helping student develop better habits when studying or working, staying more mindful of their posture, and hopefully leading a better future for motion-capture technology.
