Our goal is to track edits to recipes that might have gotten lost otherwise like a few minutes less in the oven for even gooyer cookies like Grandma makes. Let's show you how we sauce control recipes!

Inspiration

We created Sauce Control based on a problem that we all experienced. When working with family recipes reading off a handwritten card with a mass of edits is difficult. We wanted to create a platform that combined the data flow of source control with an easy to use system that is family friendly for the non-tech savvy.

What it does

Sauce Control allows users to sign in with their Google accounts and store recipes for free through our storage service. Additionally, they can look up other recipes on the website made by other users and "fork" those recipes to make edits that they want to see. These edits can be seen globally through each recipe's history.

How we built it

Our first step towards this was using a login service that was easy to use and trusted. We implemented a Google sign in for our users that keeps them signed without any hassle or worry. Our service is hosted on Firebase using a ReactJS framework. Our recipes are stored in cloud firestore with the images stored in firebases storage service.

Challenges we ran into

Our group spent time learning two technologies completely new to us: Firestore and Google Sign-In. This took a lot of our to set up, and since we all had limited web development experience, we had our fair share of debugging to do for this project as well.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We made a fully functional website within 36 hours, while learning and using two technologies new to us. We spent more time focusing on styling, and it certainly looks better than we anticipated. Very proud of this.

What we learned

We learned about the value of persistence and the importance of taking breaks from some problems to gain a fresh perspective.
