Inspiration
Inspired to build based on Shipaton’s own influencer category. Abbey Sharp’s Nutrition category challenge. Abbey’s own words were “An app for women who no longer want or have the capacity to let the pursuit of [health] goals consume their lives, people who don't need another rigid meal plan, but a flexible framework that works whether they're at home, in restaurants, on travel days, or when they're just eating their kids' leftovers over the sink." The app should be based on Abbey’s signature method, “The hunger-crushing combo” approach. It reframes the entire diet culture; in fact, it's an anti-diet approach. Instead of asking what to restrict in your meals. HCC is about what we can add to make this meal more satisfying. In practice, add, don’t cut. This is how Satia was born: short for “Satiating”(hence pronounced as “Sashia”)
What it does
Satia is basically Abbeyfying your meal-building; it's simply a meal builder and a craving calculator as Abbey wants. Snap/upload or describe your meal or craving. Satia’s AI will instantly suggest what to add based on the Macros that matter for a hunger-crushing combo approach: protein, fibre, healthy fat. To make your meal more satisfying and make you feel energised throughout the day without skipping your favourite snack. In Satia, there is no calorie counting, no macro tracking, no forbidden foods.
It’s built for really messy situations, if you have a non-ideal planning routine: restaurant and snack support lets you snap a menu and get a real pairing suggestion from what’s actually available there. Whether you're at home, travelling, or eating your kid's leftovers over the sink.
Satia also comes with an insight system that automatically delivers hunger pattern tracking without feeling like looking at a scoreboard. It quietly notices your addictions from logging and finds if your recent meals in a row are missing protein(or the other 2 macros), and Satia surfaces a suggestion to fill that gap to help you satiate. Beyond that, Satia offers a full library of potential combos you can try every day with popular dishes. And a bite-sized guide of hunger-crushing combo approach that helps you as a “in-your-pocket dietician” as Abbey Described
How we built it
Satia is built with Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose Multiplatform, sharing nearly all business logic and UI across iOS and Android from a single codebase. Firebase (Auth, Firestore, Storage) handles accounts and data, Google's Gemini API powers the AI suggestions (both text and vision, for photo-based input), and RevenueCat manages the subscription paywall across both platforms with a single integration.
Challenges we ran into
- Staying in line on “no diet culture” is not easy - It was really tempting to add more features to the app; I had intense urges to add features like calorie numbers, hunger and energy tracker, streaks, etc.
- First time KMP+CMP project - Being a professional Android engineer, it was really challenging for me to build apps on IOS, but thanks to my affection for Kotlin. Some of the real challenges were getting familiar with a new dependency injection method. I was only familiar with Dagger Hilt. Familiarising myself with a new tech Stack was a bit challenging.
- Fine tune gemini api to get the right response
- Picking the right design, I initially started as a flat design with icon-based images and having a mascot, but then realised looking at inspirations on Mobbin(Thanks to sponsored credits, great platform), for a food-based app it's better to have realistic images
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Featured in Devpost's Week 2 of shipaton newsletter with appreciation for Satia's onboarding screen and animations. They mentioned my X/Twitter account at the top of the newsletter
- Won Noise's (getnoise.com) weekly Shipaton contest three times, worth $600 in ad spend
- Received an email from JetBrains officials requesting links to my KMP articles for future visibility.
- Got permission from Abbey Sharp via Instagram message to use her materials and images
- Regular #Shipaton #BuildInPublic posts on X/twitter helped grow to nearly 700 followers
- Got apps approved in both stores in 6 days (Even with 2 rejections in between)
What we learned
Building a restraint-based product decision is harder than building. Having the right product mindset and following the right PRD is harder than the engineering part sometimes. It’s easy to add more features in the era of AI. Leaving them out is the hard part from a software engineering perspective physiologically.
KMP+CMP is really good if you want to build for both Android and IOS. I have shipped native apps on both platforms. Professionally, I am an Android engineer, but from now on I should stick with KMP+CMP for building; it saves a lot of time
What's next for Satia : Hunger crushing coach
Better personalization from the Home insight system, expanding the library for more suggestion variety, and continuing to build alongside Abbey's own guidance for the app
