Inspiration
Natural disasters are increasing in frequency and severity, yet responders often rely on delayed or fragmented information. We were inspired by the idea that satellites already capture real-time global data, but that data isn’t easily accessible in a unified, actionable format. SAT-COM was created to bridge this gap and turn satellite data into clear, real-time situational awareness.
What it does
SAT-COM is a real-time disaster response dashboard that aggregates satellite-based data and displays active incidents on a global interface. It provides a live feed of disasters, highlights severity levels, and enables users to monitor and manage incidents in one centralized platform. The system helps users quickly understand and respond to evolving situations.
How we built it
We built SAT-COM as a full-stack web application using Replit as our primary development environment. Using Replit’s AI-assisted tools, we rapidly developed both the frontend interface and backend services in a single integrated workspace. The system connects to public satellite data sources, including APIs provided by NASA, processes the data, and displays it through an interactive dashboard with a live map and incident feed. This approach allowed us to focus on system design, usability, and real-world functionality.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was ensuring the system remained stable while handling real-time data updates. Synchronizing the live feed, map, and dashboard metrics required careful coordination. We also encountered issues with deployment and configuration within the development environment, as well as handling situations where external satellite data could be delayed or unavailable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building a system that feels like a real operational dashboard rather than a basic prototype. Designing a clean, professional interface, integrating live data, and implementing features like live feed management and severity tracking were key accomplishments. We also successfully built and deployed the entire system within a single development platform.
What we learned
We learned that building impactful systems is not just about writing code, but about structuring information in a way that supports decision-making. Using AI-assisted development tools helped us move quickly, but we also learned the importance of understanding how each part of the system works together. We gained experience in building full-stack applications and managing real-time data flows.
What's next for SAT-COM Disaster Response
In the future, we plan to expand SAT-COM with predictive analytics, automated alerts, and additional data sources. We also aim to improve scalability and introduce collaboration features for multiple users and organizations. Our long-term vision is to evolve SAT-COM into a reliable platform for real-world emergency response and disaster management.
