Every 11 seconds, an elderly is admitted to the hospital because of an injury, and every 19 minutes, a death occurs globally because of falling. Once fallen, the risk of another fall peaks by 40%. This even instils fear in both the caretakers and the elderly people, leading to decreased mobility and increased dependence on caregivers. Falls are a major health concern for older adults, sometimes even leading to deaths and costing us lives, since help couldn’t be reached on time.
Sarathi, is a real-time fall detection wearable for older adults that alerts emergency contacts if a fall is detected. We use an IMU sensor’s accelerometer and gyroscope to sense the motion, machine learning to detect the fall, and a GSM module to send emergency messages to provided contacts. This can provide peace of mind for older adults and their loved ones, knowing that they have a device that can quickly alert someone if they fall and need assistance.
