About the Project "Sarah's Redemption" is a dystopian comic book narrative designed to immerse readers in a brutal, post-apocalyptic world. The story follows Sarah , a survivor navigating a radioactive wasteland, battling her inner demons, and striving to save her sister, Hannah , who is trapped and slowly succumbing to dehydration. This project blends storytelling with survival mechanics, integrating radiation exposure and environmental challenges to heighten tension and engagement.
Inspiration The project was inspired by:
- Classic post-apocalyptic narratives such as The Road by Cormac McCarthy and the Fallout game series.
- The visual storytelling techniques of François Schuiten and Moebius, whose art captures the surreal and haunting beauty of dystopian worlds.
- The desire to create an interactive, tension-filled story that bridges emotional depth with survival horror.
What We Learned Throughout this project, we gained invaluable insights into:
- Story Design : Balancing emotional stakes with world-building to keep the audience engaged.
- Mechanics Integration : Incorporating systems like radiation levels and dehydration without disrupting the narrative flow.
- Visual Storytelling : Writing detailed prompts for comic panels that could vividly depict tension and atmosphere.
- Interactive Decision-Making : Crafting meaningful choices that influence the storyline and create a sense of agency.
How We Built It
- Conceptual Framework : Developed a multi-beat story structure, starting with an atmospheric introduction and progressing through escalating dangers and emotional climaxes.
- Radiation & Dehydration Systems : Designed simple mechanics that tie directly to story progression:
- Radiation: An invisible threat that adds urgency and tension.
- Dehydration: Tracking Hannah 's condition to heighten stakes.
- Visual Prompts : Created comic panel prompts using shot types (e.g., ECU, LS, MS) and cinematic techniques to guide illustrators in bringing the scenes to life.
- HTML Framework : Built a clean and minimal HTML structure to present the story in a readable, visually engaging way, suitable for GitHub pages.
Challenges Faced
- Balancing Tension : Ensuring the story remained gripping without overwhelming readers with despair.
- Radiation System Constraints : Incorporating the system without explicitly mentioning numbers in the narrative required creative solutions to maintain immersion.
- Character Development : Striking a balance between Sarah ’s guilt-driven mission and her resilience to survive.
- Visual Description : Writing prompts that captured vivid imagery within a 20-word limit, staying true to the French comic style.
Future Plans
- Expand the narrative to explore more characters and their struggles in this dystopian world.
- Incorporate dynamic illustrations for key story beats, bringing the world to life.
- Build an interactive web platform that allows readers to make real-time choices and influence the story’s outcome.
