Inspiration 🌱
During the ongoing crises in Sudan, many individuals lost their jobs, savings, and even access to basic services. Despite the growing need for humanitarian aid, many prefer sustainable support over temporary donations. This inspired us to build Saqeyat Khair, a platform that empowers small-scale entrepreneurs through interest-free microfunding.
What it does 💡
Saqeyat Khair connects donors with people in need of starting or growing small, local businesses. Instead of classic charity, it provides revolving funds—the beneficiaries return the money over time, and it is re-invested to help others. The platform ensures transparency, sustainability, and a real sense of community impact.
How we built it 🛠️
- We designed a user-friendly front-end interface using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and integrated responsive design with Bootstrap.
- The back-end is powered by Python (Flask) and PostgreSQL, with a REST API that handles authentication, project posting, donor interactions, and repayments.
- We used GitHub for collaboration, Figma for UI/UX design, and Render for deployment.
Challenges we ran into 🚧
- Finding reliable offline payment gateways and SMS notification services that work inside Sudan.
- Building trust without relying on traditional banking infrastructure.
- Optimizing performance for low-end devices and weak networks.
What we learned 📚
- Building fintech platforms in humanitarian contexts is deeply challenging but rewarding.
- Simplicity and clarity in UI design are critical when targeting diverse communities.
- Data security and transparency are non-negotiable in any donation-based system.
What's next 🚀
- Integrate mobile money options like bank of Khartoum and Bede sudan.
- Add community rating for project transparency.
- Collaborate with NGOs and local volunteers for project verification and outreach.
