Inspiration
When the track "Would Piss People Off on LinkedIn" called, we had no choice but to answer. As students constantly being told to "optimize your LinkedIn," we couldn't help but notice one thing— the comments suck. Whether it’s some soulless "Congrats" or that robotic "Insightful," LinkedIn comments have zero personality. It's like a corporate cult where the only thing people say is what they've been told to say. So, we thought—why not spice things up a little? We wanted to inject some Gen Z chaos into those LinkedIn comment sections and bring some flair that’s clearly missing. And boom! 'SappyC' was born. (It’s like SaaS, but for pissing people off with comments, lol.)
What it does
SappyC generates 6 wild, unhinged comments with different tones (sarcastic, meme-like, blunt...you name it) to shake things up on LinkedIn. Simply paste a post’s content, and we’ll deliver the perfect savage responses guaranteed to make some noise. Warning: Proceed with caution—posting these could probably (most definitely) stir something up!
How we built it
We are big fans of big pictures, so obviously we started with some very big plans—users logging into LinkedIn and generating comments automatically while scrolling. But we quickly hit a wall after realizing web scraping LinkedIn is illegal and we couldn't figure out how to legally enable 2FA to let people log in either. So, we pivoted and leaned into what we knew: Gemini API + Streamlit. We used Gemini to generate the 6 comments in different tones, and Streamlit to host it all. It's simple, hosted on Streamlit Cloud, and easy to use. Just copy-paste the content, and we’ll do the rest.
Challenges we ran into
While we couldn't deliver the LinkedIn login feature we initially dreamed of, we made it work by building a simpler tool. The main challenge? Time management (thanks, procrastination!) and learning new things from scratch—web scraping wasn’t the solution, but we came up with an alternative that works.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We may not have gone full automation, but we still made a tool that lets users generate 6 savage, different comments for LinkedIn. Plus, It’s hosted on Streamlit Cloud, making it accessible to anyone. More than just a project, this was something we wanted to create—and we had a great time bringing it to life.
What we learned
This hackathon taught us a lot! From the legality of scraping data (oops) to using the Gemini API, we learned the importance of pivoting fast and embracing the tools that work. We also learned that LinkedIn comments don’t have to be so boring!
What's next for SappyC
We’re looking to enhance the tool with even more tones, add custom features, and maybe even implement the LinkedIn login feature—legally, of course. For now, though, SappyC is ready to bring Gen Z chaos to LinkedIn, one savage comment at a time. 💥
Tracks we are applying for
And, tadaa! The part we are most excited about is the tracks. TBH, we loveee the idea of this hackathon but the tracks are just chef's kiss The tracks we want be part of are:
- the most cutesy pink project
- I'm Just A Girl
- (WPPOIL) would piss people off on linkedin
- (WBUOT) would blow up on tiktok
- i laughed. (new hackers prize) - yes, newbie alert!
