Inspiration

San Andres Movie. In the movie there is a huge earthquake in San Andres, and Dwayne Johnson has to try to get people to safety. A big tsunami also hits the city, and we feel like this invention would have helped him save countless more lives on the beach

What it does

A person pushes one of four buttons on the main device to trigger a buzzer that beeps in a specific pattern to identify the disaster/incident at hand. The four alarms are tsunami, rip currents, shark-infested waters, and drowning. There will only be buzzing for the drowning to signify it is not a danger to the entire public and only audible to lifeguards on duty. Loud audio alarms will play for the other scenarios, as well as specific buzzing patterns for lifeguards. These alarms can also be remotely activated via Bluetooth connection from a remote device.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

A challenge we ran into was implementing an auxiliary breadboard converter into our design as it would not fit into the breadboard directly. The solution was to learn how to solder for the first time and solder wires onto the needed pins to connect to the breadboard. Another challenge we faced was amplifying the sound coming from the speakers. After an initial look over the materials list, an audio amplifier chip was not explicitly listed, so we had to research how to amplify audio without it via resistors. However, this caused heavy distortion and was undesirable. We took a second detailed look at the materials provided and found the chip inside a kit that did not list the components it held. We then learned how to implement the chip and successfully amplified the audio without heavy distortion.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to finish our device that fits within our vision and even expanded upon it in our first time participating in these types of events.

What we learned

We learned how to successfully interact with our device remotely via Bluetooth connection, and we learned how to solder.

What's next for Sapphire Alert

Implementing the device to not be reliant on a laptop.
