π Santa's Study Sleigh
Inspiration
I love studying in aesthetic, calming environments cafΓ©s, softly lit rooms, winter evenings with music playing in the background. In those moments, studying feels intentional and comforting rather than stressful.
However, most productivity tools feel mechanical: timers, checklists, and numbers that donβt emotionally reward effort.
Santa Study Sleigh was inspired by the idea of romanticizing discipline. Instead of forcing productivity, the app invites students into a cozy, magical Christmas world where focus feels calm and progress feels meaningful.
What it does
Santa Study Sleigh is a Christmas-themed productivity app that gamifies studying through storytelling and visual rewards.
- Students create study tasks as gifts Santa needs to collect and pack
- Each Pomodoro session moves Santa forward along a festive track
- Tasks are packed visually in real time as progress is made
- Cozy winter animations, music, and lighting help reduce distractions
Final Reward Experience
When all tasks are completed, Santa reaches the destination an interactive, gesture-controlled 3D Christmas tree that celebrates completion.
Gesture-Controlled 3D Christmas Tree (Key Feature)
The 3D Christmas tree is the emotional core of the experience.
Using real-time hand gesture recognition:
- β Open hand β the Christmas tree explodes into glowing particles
- β Close fist / pinch β the tree magically reforms
- π€² Move your hand β the tree moves and reacts in real time
This creates a magical, fairy-like feeling as if the entire Christmas world is literally in your hands.
Task completion feels rewarding, playful, and memorable rather than stressful.
How I built it
- Frontend: Next.js, React, TypeScript
- 3D & Rendering:
- Three.js
@react-three/fiber&@react-three/drei
- Three.js
- Gesture Control: MediaPipe Vision (real-time hand tracking)
- Visual Effects: Postprocessing with bloom and lighting
- Styling: Tailwind CSS
The Pomodoro timer, task system, Santaβs movement, and visual rewards are tightly connected every action has a visible consequence.
Challenges I ran into
- Making gesture-controlled 3D interactions smooth and intuitive
- Mapping real-world hand movements to meaningful visual responses
- Balancing immersive visuals without distracting from focus
- Coordinating state between tasks, Pomodoro sessions, animations, and rewards
Accomplishments Iβm proud of
- Building a gesture-controlled 3D reward experience
- Combining productivity mechanics with immersive storytelling
- Creating a calming, distraction-free study environment
- Making studying feel cozy, festive, and emotionally rewarding
What I learned
- Emotional engagement improves consistency and focus
- Visual and interactive rewards are more motivating than numbers
- Gesture-based interaction creates a strong sense of presence
- Productivity tools donβt have to feel harsh they can feel warm
Whatβs next
- Add non-seasonal themes for year-round use
- Expand gesture-controlled interactions
- Introduce adaptive environments based on focus patterns
- Add cloud sync and multi-device support
- Improve accessibility-friendly gesture modes
