According to WHO, in SSA 75% of the population is highly vulnerable to Climate-Health Impact due to poor WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) infrastructure. Climate-WASH-Cholera nexus is highly preventable. Nigeria, largest populace in SSA, has recurrent cholera epidemics, with over 4,800 cases and 156 deaths reported across 35 states in 2024 alone1. Endemic since the 1970s, outbreaks surge year after year as more than half the population still lacks access to safe WASH. Climate change—through flooding, drought, and rising temperatures—further amplifies the threat. Yet, the country has no nationwide WASH monitoring policy or integrated climate-health early warning. The fragmented coordination across climate, health, and WASH sectors leaves health systems and communities in a constant state of reaction rather than prevention.
