Inspiration
We want to make an impact on the society during these times of crisis, so we decided to learn something new and apply it to solve some of the problems the world is facing today. In an effort to reduce the impact of COVID-19, we built an app that informs users about restaurants that offer hand sanitizers.
What it does
Users can easily browse a map of restaurants that provide hand sanitizers on the home screen. They can also submit their own data to improve the community effort.
How I built it
We learned how to use Flutter, the framework developed by Google, in this hackathon, and managed to finish a functional app for the Android platform.
Challenges I ran into
Due to unfamiliarity with the Flutter framework, we encountered some problems with its syntax early on, but eventually we overcame it and incorporated a few popular API services offered by Google.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud of how the app turned out in the end, being total newbies in app development. Some accomplishments include displaying a full map with markers, live updating location data, and the search function for locations.
What I learned
We learned that it is crucial to keep an open mind in the hackathon, try our best to come up with an idea, and just face the challenges head on.
What's next for Sanitizer
Since Flutter is a cross-platform framework, the next logical step would be to deploy it on iOS and the web. We also want to incorporate other features such as a rating system based on multiple safety factors. This app could also be used in different scenarios in addition to restaurants.
