Inspiration
We understood the impact of COVID-19, and we were searching for a quick and easy way to help the situation. We knew that the average person only washes their hands for 3-6 seconds, when the CDC recommendation is a minimum of 20 seconds.
What it does
To combat this situation, our group came up with a product to inform the user when to start and stop washing their hands. There is a joystick that controls the functions of the device. When the user presses down on the joystick, a servo dispenses two pumps of soap. Then when you push the joystick towards any direction, it will start a 20 second timer with a series of 4 lights. Each light represents 5 seconds, and the red light lets the user know when they can stop washing their hands.
How we built it
For the circuit, we used an Arduino Uno, an analogue joystick module, a servo, and a few LED's. To program the Arduino Uno, we used the Arduino IDE, and learned the Arduino language, which is similar to C/C++.
Challenges we ran into
One of the first challenges we ran into was brainstorming ideas. We knew that we wanted to have our project be COVID related but we did not know at first. The next challenge was learning the Arduino IDE and learning how the components speak with the Arduino Uno. One of our members had an Arduino but used it very rarely and the other 3 members had no experience at all, making it an almost entirely new concept.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the overall product because it came out looking really good. We are also proud that we were able to learn the Arduino IDE and make a working product. Additionally, we were proud of each other due to how well we meshed together as a team even though this was our first time ever working together.
What we learned
What we learned is how to work as a team and collaborate with each other while working on separate parts to increase our efficiency. We also learned how to use the Arduino IDE and combine different modules to the Arduino Uno through their library.
What's next for ~Sanitization Station~
An improvement to the Sanitization Station’s enclosure is one major upgrade that can be done in the future. More specifically, modelling the enclosure so that it would be more fitted to the bottle and more compact would be the two goals we can work towards (as it is a very large box at the moment). Additionally, the servo mounting system controlling the dispensing of soap is inefficient and requires an update.
