Inspiration
Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. – Malcolm X .
We have all gone through the Sudanese certificate stage, and some of us are about to embark on this journey. However, the disruption of education during the war has caused numerous challenges for Sudanese certificate students—interrupted classes, absent teachers, closed schools, displaced families, and a lack of educational infrastructure (classrooms, instructors, textbooks). The psychological and emotional toll has also affected students' ability to focus and learn. Additionally, rising prices and the devaluation of the Sudanese pound have made it difficult for many families to afford their children's education. This is why we envisioned Sand—to be a true support for every student, ensuring that learning continues despite the hardships
What it does
Sand is an innovative AI-driven educational platform tailored for Sudanese certificate students. It provides:
🎥 High-quality online lessons & courses with top teachers
📝 Concise summaries & recorded lectures for all subjects (scientific & literary)
🧪 Smart mock exams that identify weak areas and predict likely exam questions
📊 Performance analytics with score percentages based on historical exam patterns
How we built it
📊 Phase 1: Research & Analysis
Conducted statistical analysis of Sudanese Certificate students needs through online surveys
Defined system requirements using Draw.io for architectural planning
🗄️ Phase 2: Database Design
Implemented SQL based relational architecture for:
Data integrity and minimal redundancy
Scalability to support future features
Role-based access control (students/teachers/admins)
⚙️ Phase 3: Backend Development
Built with ASP.NET Core for:
Cross-platform compatibility
High-performance API endpoints
Secure authentication flows
🤖 Phase 4: AI Integration
Leveraged Gemini API to power:
Intelligent question generation.
Dynamic content summarization.
Adaptive learning paths.
📱 Phase 5: Flutter Mobile Development
Built cross-platform app using Flutter framework to:
Core Flutter packages used:
flutter_bloc: ^8.1.3
dio: ^5.3.2
cached_network_image: ^3.3.0
🌐 Phase 6: Web Development
Built responsive web interface using core technologies:
html-Css-JavaScript
Challenges We Faced
One of the key challenges we encountered was designing a scalable and efficient database structure. We needed a system that avoids data redundancy, supports various user roles (students, teachers, admins), and can easily grow to accommodate future features like competitive learning, live chat, or AI-generated content. Another major challenge was ensuring smooth integration between multiple technologies—from mobile (Flutter) to backend services (ASP.NET) and web interfaces (HTML, CSS, JS ,tailwind)—while keeping the user experience seamless across all platforms. Additionally, incorporating AI capabilities using Gemini API introduced complexity in handling intelligent content generation without overwhelming the system or the user.
Achievements We're Proud Of
One of the things we’re most proud of is optimizing the AI question generation process. We successfully reduced the average generation time from 12 seconds to just 9 seconds, resulting in a noticeably smoother and faster experience for students during practice sessions. This improvement significantly enhanced the responsiveness of the platform, especially in low-bandwidth environments.
What We Learned
Throughout this hackathon journey, we learned far more than just writing code. We discovered the real value of teamwork—how to communicate effectively, divide responsibilities, and work together under pressure. We also learned how to respect different perspectives, resolve disagreements in a healthy way, and collaborate to solve complex problems as a unit. Most importantly, we learned that supporting each other, even in small tasks, can make a big difference in reaching a common goal.
What's next for Sanad | سند
Sanad is more than just a hackathon project—it's a vision for transforming education in Sudan and beyond. Our next steps include: Expanding content coverage across more subjects and grade levels. Onboarding qualified teachers from Sudan and abroad to diversify teaching styles and expertise. Enhancing our AI features to deliver smarter recommendations, personalized study plans, and more accurate exam predictions. Building a gamified learning experience to keep students engaged and motivated. Optimizing for low-connectivity regions, ensuring access even in rural and underserved areas. Launching a pilot program with real students and teachers to gather feedback and refine the platform. We believe Sanad can become a cornerstone in building a more inclusive, modern, and effective education system in Sudan—accessible to every learner, anywhere.
