Executive Summary: Sana is modifying the wheelchair to make it possible for people using them to maneuver up and down curbs with ease. By using this modified version of the wheelchair, it would make movements from up and down curbs smoother and therefore would make it more comfortable for people using wheelchairs especially if the user is recovering from an injury or a surgery and those sudden drops would make less of an impact.

Design: There will be a laser light-sensor which will be pointing perpendicular to the ground. The code that we have running will measure elevation differences of the ground. If there is an increase in elevation, the front piston will extend to the elevated surface (curb). The user can then slowly roll the front tires up to the elevated surface of the curb. Then the user will touch the surface of the wall of the curb and the user can pull a lever which will extend the back piston which will elevate the backside of the wheelchair to hoist the rest of the wheelchair onto the surface of the sidewalk. Once the entire wheelchair is securely on the sidewalk, the user can pull the lever to retract the back piston and continue. This accessory can also be used to go down a curb. Some projected challenges are: • Could possibly be expensive, especially for motorized wheelchairs. • New components could possibly add too much weight to the frame. • Can this new component be used both indoors and outdoors? • How will this new component be powered? • How long will the charge last before having to change the battery/charge?
