Inspiration
As sophomores in high school, this was our first hackathon, and we wanted the challenge of competing against college teams. Working with San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity gave us a chance to make an impact in helping.
What it does
Our project is a website survey distribution, data collection, and provides a sheet for easy data visualization. It's designed to streamline how Habitat for Humanity tracks its impact.
How we built it
We used React.js and Google Sheets for the frontend. The backend uses Google Looker Studio for data, and the project is hosted on GitHub Pages.
Challenges
We ran into major database issues that cost us about 12 hours, forcing us to switch from our initial database choice to Google Looker. Integrating everything under a tight deadline was tough, especially since we were competing against more experienced teams. But we kept pushing and found solutions.
Accomplishments
We’re proud of building a project that’s functional, especially as one of the only high school teams here. And the website is a static so it costs nothing to the non profit!
What we learned
We learned about full-stack development, managing a project under pressure, and how to create solutions that provide real value. We also learned how to quickly pivot and adapt when things don’t go as planned.
What's next
We plan to refine our skills, improve how we use data and explore adding more data sources.
