What it does

When we told one of the mentors that we were building a rage-inducing game, she asked us if it was like League:p. Well, the answer is: nope! Samu's Bizarre Adventure is a chill (not really) little platform game where the player must jump and climb their way through a series of levels, demanding quiiite a bit of focus on timing and reflexes. Be careful of where you're going or you'll be ejected backwards over and over! Try to make Samu happy by helping him avoiding the enemies martlets, get through the lava and spikes while bagging as many Ka-Ching! as possible :))

def how_to_play():
    """
    1. Press the left and right arrow keys to move.
    2. Press the space bar to jump.
    3. Collect as many coins as you can.
    4. Avoid the martlet and don't touch the lava or spikes!
    """

How we built it

pYYYYgaaaAAAmEEEE (...and Python of course)

Challenges we ran into

Since this is our first game dev and PyGame experience, it took us quite a bit of time to get things started and debug the (numerous) issues we ran into, starting from drawing Samu. Throughout the implementation, it wasn't rare to see Samu run out of the frame, walk with half his body under the ground, float and even fly while wiggling in the sky, etc., etc. Additionally, we were NOT expecting to have to deal with physics (???). Some brain cells had to be sacrificed in order to allow Samu to jump and bounce back properly.

In conclusion, game physics is hard even for simple 2d platform games.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Honestly, we are just proud to have been able to make it work out because we have never done game dev before. It was sincerely a great experience, probably the hackathon in which we both had the most fun, despite the (again) sleepless hours and (many) cups of coffee ;)

What we learned

Again, pYYYYgaaaAAAmEEEE (and that it is actually possible to develop a finished product in teams of 2 for Hackathons LOL)

What's next for Samu's Bizarre Adventure

Probably more NPCs, levels, and skills? :PPP
