Inspiration, Summarization, & Design Elements
June is the season when summer begins, school ends, and my birthday party takes place, but most importantly, June is Pride Month. Although Pride Month is filled with parades, festivals, and joy, it's also a time when society reflects upon the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and acknowledges that the fight for equal rights is far from over. This year, due to concerns of COVID-19 looming all across the globe, pride month is being overshadowed, so I designed this flag to incorporate both COVID-19 and Pride Month and display how we as a society can still celebrate and acknowledge Pride Month while staying safe.
The colors used in the word "solidarity" are representative of the colors included on the pride flag, while the word "sameness" is all in black. I used this contrast in color to juxtapose the idea of solidarity and how it can help everyone express themselves versus sameness and how it symbolizes a dull society. The font showcasing "Solidarity" is Cheque and the font showcasing "doesn't require" is Now, and the font showcasing "sameness" is RoxboroughCF.
The color theme of the illustrations is representative of the pride flag, which includes the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The illustrations at the bottom of the flag represent people wearing face masks celebrating pride month by wearing pride-themed colors. This symbolizes how although COVID-19 is sweeping the globe, the illustrations represent how that won't stop society from celebrating and acknowledging pride month safely. I hope that this flag inspires people to continue fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, even during a pandemic, because the LGBTQ+ community has been denied their rights for so many years that we as a society should not stop fighting for equality and justice.
I envision this flag hanging in every single home and business to represent how society still stands with the LGBTQ+ community and that we are all in this fight together. When it comes to producing the flag, I imagine that the flag is made with natural fiber fabric, giving it a hint of cream color background. All the text and images will be printed.
