Inspiration

SaltSense was inspired when the creators of SaltSense dived into the world of desalination. They had learned many things about it's impact, problems, and future. They decided it would be up to them to take desalination into their own hands and make a brighter future for it.

What it does

SaltSense is dedicated to spread awareness about the dangers of desalination and inspire people around the globe to join in SaltSense's efforts of making better opportunities for desalination. I lets people from all around the world to send their great ideas about desalination to us, so that we can bring it to the real world.

How we built it

To build SaltSense we used many languages including, Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and even a framework called Flask. Flask let us host our website and put all the pieces together to make our final product.

Challenges we ran into

In our first version of SaltSense we discovered that it wasn't very appealing to it's users. So with some help from one of the creators, Dan Nwahiri, he was able to convert the basic website to a bootstrap template. We also had a lot of trouble with the graphs of desalination, they were all combined leading to repeating years and unorganized data. Arnik Chauhan, with a little Googling and researching was able to convert the graphs to the final product with multiple charts separated by their region.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We as a team were able to overcome all the challenges, major or minor, to make SaltSense to the best of our abilities. We were able to pitch our product and show how awesome SaltSense is.

What we learned

At first we weren't sure what we would work on, but we decided we wanted to be unique. We scurried the internet for topics that not many people talked about, and then we found it. We learned that desalination is the process of removing salt and other substances from saltwater to make freshwater. Now that might not seem so bad, but most desalination industries just discharge the brine-like substance which is heavily salt-concentrated back into the ocean. The problem is that now there is less water in the ocean and more salt! This raises the salt concentration of the water which can kill and destroy ecosystems! Desalination is also very energy intensive and harmful to the environment.

What's next for SaltSense

SaltSense hopes to partner with international organizations to promote sustainable water solutions across the globe. SaltSense would also like to provide education and a better understanding of desalination to people around the globe.
