Inspiration

We were inspired to create EarnUp by the TechTogether Online theme of International Equal Pay Day. Providing people of marginalized genders with the tools to successfully negotiate their salaries and research the salaries of their peers is crucial in the fight for equal pay. We believe that EarnUp can play a role in this fight by educating about salary negotiation and sharing resources.

What it does

EarnUp includes a salary transparency spreadsheet with data from industry professionals, a salary negotiation chatbot that can answer your questions on salary negotiation and help with negotiation practice, and resources on salary negotiation for women in technology and other male-dominated fields.

How we built it

We built the EarnUp website on Glitch using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It was stored in Github and hosted using Github Pages. The salary negotiation chatbot was created using Microsoft's Power Virtual Agents chatbot service.

Challenges we ran into

Neither of us had created a chatbot before, so it took some research and exploration to understand how Microsoft's Power Virtual Agents chatbot service worked. After exploring the lessons built into the service and playing around with the chatbot question, condition, and message parameters, we had a better understanding of how the service worked and how it could be used for our purposes.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This project allowed us to venture into new territory by creating our own AI chatbot, which was a first for both of us. We're proud of how successfully our chatbot was able to answer questions on salary negotiation and run through practice negotiation examples.

What we learned

Creating a chatbot for the first time was a great opportunity to learn about how chatbots are structured and how they respond to questions. We were able to gain a better understanding of chatbots and AI from this experience.

What's next for EarnUp

In the future, we'd like to turn the salary transparency page into a fully functioning database, which would allow us to gain experience with implementing a database system integrating NoSQL databases like MongoDB.
