Inspiration

The inspiration for creating this application stemmed from a desire to empower employees to better understand their salaries and how they compare to others in similar job positions. Salary transparency is an important aspect of ensuring fair compensation, and we wanted to provide a tool that allows individuals to easily assess the fairness of their salaries.

What it does

This application, titled "Salary Comparison," serves two primary functions: known salary comparison and salary calculation. For known salary comparison, users who already know their yearly salary can input this information. They can then select a job position from a dropdown menu, and the app will compare their salary to the salary associated with the selected job position. The app calculates the difference and provides a message indicating whether the user's salary is higher, lower, or equal to the selected job's salary. For salary calculation, although the primary focus is on salary comparison, the application also allows users to calculate their yearly salary based on their hourly wage and hours worked per day for each day of the week. This feature is useful for individuals who may not know their yearly salary but do have information about their hourly wage and weekly work hours.

How we built it

The application was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We created the structure of the web page, including input fields, dropdown menus, buttons, and result display areas. We also linked external CSS and JavaScript files, ensuring it was visually appealing and user-friendly. This included centering elements, adding background images, and defining fonts. JavaScript was used to implement the core functionality of the application, handling user input, performing salary comparisons, and displaying results.

Challenges we ran into

During the development process, we encountered challenges related to miscommunication and language syntax. At the start, we had different visions for the project. There were instances when our ideas clashed, but we managed to converge on the same objective in the end. Effective communication and regular updates helped overcome this challenge. Another challenge was our collective unfamiliarity with HTML and JavaScript. Until this project, none of us had experience with either language. We relied entirely on ChatGPT to assemble our program.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Several accomplishments were achieved during the development process. We succeeded in creating a functional web application that offers value to users by allowing them to compare their salaries with others in different job positions. We designed a user-friendly and visually appealing interface that enhances the user experience. None of us had ever used any of the langauages in this code prior, and we are proud that our project came to fruition entirely via learning through ChatGPT.

What we learned

Developing this app helped each of us improve our technical skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and we gained a better understanding of web development. Effective collaboration and communication within the team proved essential for the project's success.

What's next for Salary Comparison for Fair Compensation

In the future, we plan to enhance the application by adding more job positions and integrating the program with other user information in a database. Although still in its early stages of development, the program has significant potential for growth. Eventually, the salary predictors might be based on average user submissions for specific jobs, potentially even considering geography and time of hiring.
