Inspiration

we were inspired by the Muslim pro app and the forest app. The Muslim pro app has prayer times, which tell what time the daily prayers are. The forest timer app is a productivity app that locks certain websites while you are busy doing your work. We made a Chrome extension that combines both.

What it does

This stops you from using your laptop for 15 minutes, so you are forced to step away from your device and dedicate 15 minutes to your mindfulness. There is also a whitelist of websites that you are allowed to enter if they are for very important websites.

How we built it

We built this app using HTML/CSS, JavasScript, and an API called aladhan is where all the prayer times are. We used GitHub for file sharing with our team.

Challenges we ran into

Because it was our first time using an API, we had a lot of trouble figuring out how to integrate it into the Chrome extension. Another challenge we ran into is how we would call on the time using the API and how to create a timer to count down the minutes left for the user until they can access their web pages again.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that as a team of first-time hackathon attendees, we were able to create an app that can help people boost their mindfulness in their daily lives

What we learned

We learned as a team how to create a web extension. We also learned the importance of time management and teamwork, because without both, we would not have been able to complete the project.

What's next for Salah Signal

We are planning on extending this app to all faiths and spiritualities so that everyone would be able to commit time every day to focus on their mindfulness. We are also thinking of monetizing with ads while the timer runs. This is ingenious, because the ads will be running while the user is stepping away from their devices, so that our users will not be harassed with a bombardment of ads while they are using the extension. We are also thinking of turning this idea into a mobile app, so that people can step away from their mobile devices for their prayers/spirituality/mindfulness time.
