Inspiration
As we were brainstorming the topic of conversation shifted towards our current online learning environment. One of the topics that branched from that were students with disabilities. Naturally we further discussed possible solutions that can help students with disabilities. We focused on students who use sign language and finalized a web app that teaches sign language with the use of sign language.
What it does
Our web app utilizers learning models provided by google to analyze and learn ASL. (American Sign Language) The model allows us to scan a live feed of users hands. From there the learning model can differentiate from types of letters.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into were formatting problems such as sizing and font issues while using Figma. Designing was a huge issue due to us wanting the best for the user experience and how to make it accessible to the elderly who might have trouble using online web applications. Another challenge we ran into was how to properly connect all the webpages together so that they would run smoothly. Working in a team of four we had many disagreements as to the vision of our project but we were able to resolve our differences by communicating and compromising with each other.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of the time and effort we as a team put into this project considering our teams busy schedule. Most of our team had to work or had other obligations to attend to but we still carved out time to put into this project. We are proud of hour for the time we spent on it.
What we learned
The main takeaways from this hackthon was defiantly how flexibility is crucial to any team. Since our team had other obligations, a general understanding that everyone might be occupied eased the stress or making project. Another important take away was good communication. Especially on an online setting communication was key to keep everyone updated and efficient.
