Open Loops

Closing the invisible tabs running in your mind

💭 Inspiration

Have you ever felt like your brain has too many tabs open?

Not from one big crisis, but from dozens of small, unresolved thoughts running in the background:

  • "I still haven't replied to mom's message from Tuesday"
  • "Should I accept that job offer?"
  • "I need to book a dentist appointment"
  • "That argument with my friend still bothers me"
  • "My resume needs updating"

Nothing individually is urgent. But collectively? Your mind feels full.

This is what psychologists call "mental load" or "cognitive load" – the invisible burden of unprocessed thoughts, unmade decisions, and unfinished tasks that occupy our mental bandwidth. Studies show that mental load significantly contributes to anxiety, burnout, and decision fatigue, especially among women who often carry disproportionate mental load in managing household and emotional labor (source).

The Problem with Existing Solutions

When we're overwhelmed, wellness apps typically respond with:

  • "Meditate for 10 minutes"
  • "Journal your thoughts"
  • "Take deep breaths"
  • "Practice gratitude"

These are helpful. But they treat the symptom (stress, anxiety), not the source (unresolved mental loops).

We wanted to build something different. Something that actually helps you close those loops, not just acknowledge them.

Personal Connection

As a student juggling multiple deadlines, social commitments, and personal goals, I (like many in Gen Z) constantly feel mentally overloaded. Not from one big problem, but from 20 small ones running simultaneously in my mind. I found myself:

  • Forgetting important tasks
  • Feeling anxious without knowing why
  • Unable to focus because my brain was "processing in the background"
  • Avoiding conversations because I hadn't resolved previous ones

I realized: I don't need to calm down. I need to CLOSE these loops.

That's how Open Loops was born.

🎯 What it does

Open Loops is an AI-powered mental clarity platform that helps you externalize, process, and actually close the invisible mental loops occupying your mind.

Core Features

1. Brain Dump

Quickly capture any thought exactly as it comes to you. No formatting, no categories, no judgment. Just get it out of your head.

"Reply to mom's message from Tuesday"
"Decide about the job offer"
"Book dentist appointment"
"That argument with Jake"

2. AI Processing Partner

Unlike traditional journaling apps, Open Loops uses conversational AI (powered by Google Gemini) to help you actually process each loop:

  • Asks clarifying questions: "What's making you hesitate about the job offer?"
  • Helps you think through options: "Let's break this into pros and cons"
  • Suggests concrete next steps
  • Categorizes intelligently

This isn't just AI generating text – it's AI as a thinking partner.

3. Four-Category Framework

Based on cognitive behavioral therapy and decision-making frameworks, every loop gets sorted into one of four categories:

  • ACT 🔴: Do it now or schedule it (concrete action needed)
  • SHRINK 🟠: Break it into smaller, manageable steps
  • WAIT 🔵: Time or someone else is needed (out of your control for now)
  • RELEASE 🟣: Let it go – it's not worth your mental space

This framework helps you make a decision about each loop, rather than letting it swirl indefinitely in your mind.

4. Commitment Tracking

For ACT items, you can set when you'll tackle them:

  • Today
  • Tomorrow
  • This week

The app gently reminds you, celebrates when you complete them, and helps you recognize patterns (like constantly postponing the same task).

5. Visual Progress & Clarity Score

$$\text{Clarity Score} = \frac{\text{Closed Loops}}{\text{Total Loops}} \times 100\%$$

See your mental clarity improve in real-time. Each closed loop = one less thing occupying your brain.

6. Mood Check & Breathing Exercises

When you have 5+ unresolved loops, the app:

  • Checks in on your emotional state
  • Offers guided breathing if you're overwhelmed
  • Suggests Quick Triage to batch-process multiple loops

7. Demo Mode

Experience the full app instantly with sample data – no signup required. Perfect for quickly showing friends or exploring the concept.

🛠️ How we built it

Tech Stack

Frontend:

  • Next.js 16.3 (App Router) - For server-side rendering and optimal performance
  • React 19 - Latest features including server components
  • TypeScript - Type safety across the entire codebase
  • Tailwind CSS 4 - Utility-first styling with custom design system
  • Framer Motion - Smooth, purposeful animations that enhance (not distract)

Backend:

  • Next.js API Routes - Serverless architecture
  • PostgreSQL - Robust relational database
  • Prisma ORM v7 - Type-safe database access with migrations
  • NextAuth.js - Flexible authentication (GitHub/Google OAuth)

AI Integration:

  • Google Gemini 2.0 Flash - Free, empathetic AI for conversational processing
  • Custom prompt engineering for therapeutic, non-judgmental responses
  • Context-aware conversations (maintains history)

Design Philosophy:

Calm × Functional × Human-First

We deliberately chose:

  • Soft pastels instead of bright colors (reduces visual stress)
  • Serif fonts for headings (warmer, more personal)
  • Breathing whitespace (lets content breathe)
  • Gentle animations (delightful but not distracting)
  • Encouraging language (never urgent or pressuring)

Architecture Decisions

Hybrid Storage Model

┌─────────────────────┬─────────────────────┐
│ Demo Mode │ Normal Mode │
├─────────────────────┼─────────────────────┤
│ localStorage │ localStorage │
│ (demoMentalLoad │ (mentalLoadItems) │
│ Items) │ │
│ Instant access │ Persists │
│ No signup │ │
└─────────────────────┴─────────────────────┘
                │
        ┌───────┴────────┐
        │ Authenticated │

        ├────────────────┤
        │ PostgreSQL │

        │ Cross-device │
        │ sync │
        └────────────────┘

This allows:

  • Instant demo without barriers
  • Progressive enhancement (localStorage → Database)
  • Offline-first experience

Performance Optimization

We faced significant lag with 10+ loops on screen. Fixed by:

  • Removing excessive Framer Motion animations (whileHover, whileTap)
  • Simplifying transitions (0.3s → 0.2s)
  • Using CSS transitions for simple states
  • Removing expensive blur effects
  • Result: 60 FPS even with 20+ loops

🚧 Challenges we ran into

1. Demo Mode Isolation (MAJOR)

Problem: Demo data was bleeding into normal mode. Users would:

  • Exit demo
  • Click "Get Started"
  • See their demo loops still there ❌

Root Cause:

// WRONG ❌
const isDemoMode = !session?.user?.email;

This treated all non-authenticated users as demo users!

Solution:

// CORRECT ✅
const isDemoMode = () => {
  const isDemoParam = urlParams.get('demo') === 'true';
  const demoFlag = localStorage.getItem("demoMode") === "true";
  return isDemoParam || demoFlag;
};

Demo mode now only activates when explicitly triggered.

Learning: Proper state management is critical. What seems like a simple boolean can have cascading effects across the entire app.

2. AI Prompt Engineering for Empathy

Challenge: Generic AI responses felt cold and robotic. Initial attempts:

User: "I'm stressed about work"
AI: "Here are 5 stress management techniques..."

This felt like reading a Wikipedia article, not having a conversation.

Solution: Engineered prompts with:

  • Empathetic opening ("I hear you. That sounds really overwhelming.")
  • Open-ended questions ("What part of work is causing the most stress?")
  • Validation ("It makes sense you'd feel that way.")
  • Concrete suggestions ("Would it help to break this into smaller tasks?")

Result: AI conversations feel more like talking to a thoughtful friend.

3. Performance vs. Delight Balance

Challenge: We wanted delightful animations (confetti, smooth transitions, hover effects), but they caused:

  • Lag with 10+ items
  • Unresponsive buttons
  • Choppy scrolling

The Tension:

Beautiful UX ←───────?───────→ Fast Performance
     ↓ ↓
   Delight Frustration

Solution: We learned to be surgical with animations:

  • Keep: Entry/exit animations, confetti on completion
  • Remove: Constant hover effects, blur on scroll, staggered delays
  • Replace: Framer Motion → CSS transitions for simple states

Philosophy: "Animation should enhance meaning, not just add decoration."

4. Duplicate Header Bug

Problem: The phrase "ready to unload?" appeared twice on the landing screen due to:

  • Multiple conditional header sections
  • Overlapping render logic
  • Copy-paste errors during refactoring

Fix: Consolidated all header states into a single unified component with proper ternary logic:

{unresolvedCount === 0 && items.length > 0 ? (
  // "your mind is clear"
) : unresolvedCount > 0 ? (
  // "X loops need attention"
) : (
  // "ready to unload?"
)}

Learning: DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) isn't just about code reuse – it prevents logical conflicts.

5. Defining "Mental Load" Without Being Prescriptive

Challenge: How do you help people process thoughts without telling them how to feel?

We didn't want to be another app that says:

  • "This is important, do it now!"
  • "This doesn't matter, let it go!"

Solution: The four-category framework gives structure without being directive:

  • ACT = "This needs action" (not "Do it now!")
  • RELEASE = "This doesn't serve you" (not "Stop caring!")

The AI helps users arrive at their own conclusions through questions, not commands.

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of

1. Actually Solving the Problem

Most mental health apps:

  • Add to the mental load ("Remember to journal daily!")
  • Provide generic advice ("Just breathe")
  • Don't create closure

Open Loops actually helps you close loops. That's the core achievement.

2. Zero Barrier to Entry

Demo mode means anyone can try it in 30 seconds without:

  • Creating an account
  • Providing email
  • Reading tutorials

This matters for mental health tools – when you're overwhelmed, even small barriers feel insurmountable.

3. Production-Quality Code

This isn't a "hackathon hack" – it's a real product:

  • ✅ TypeScript for type safety
  • ✅ Proper error handling
  • ✅ Database migrations with Prisma
  • ✅ Clean architecture (separation of concerns)
  • ✅ Performance optimized
  • ✅ Mobile responsive
  • ✅ Accessibility considerations

Build passes with zero errors. Ready to deploy.

4. Thoughtful UX Design

Every detail was intentional:

  • Confetti on completion → celebrates progress
  • Encouraging messages → positive reinforcement
  • Age badges on loops → helps prioritize without pressure
  • Progress rings → visual feedback loop
  • Soft color palette → reduces stress

Design that heals, not just looks pretty.

5. AI as Partner, Not Replacement

We didn't build an app that replaces human thinking. We built one that supports it.

The AI:

  • Asks questions (doesn't lecture)
  • Offers suggestions (doesn't command)
  • Helps process (doesn't decide for you)

This is human-first AI.

📚 What we learned

Technical Learnings

  1. State Management is Hard

    • localStorage vs. database sync
    • Demo mode isolation
    • Real-time updates across components
  2. Performance Matters More Than You Think

    • Users feel lag at 30 FPS
    • Animations compound exponentially
    • CSS transitions > Framer Motion for simple states
  3. AI Prompt Engineering is an Art

    • Generic prompts = generic responses
    • Empathy requires explicit instruction
    • Context management is crucial
  4. Progressive Enhancement Works

    • Start with localStorage (works offline)
    • Add database (cross-device sync)
    • Add auth (security + personalization)

Design Learnings

  1. Calm Aesthetics Require Discipline

    • It's tempting to add bright colors
    • Restraint is more powerful than decoration
    • Whitespace is not wasted space
  2. Copy Matters as Much as Code

    • "Process this" vs "Make sense of this"
    • "Delete" vs "Let go"
    • Small words, big emotional impact
  3. Celebrate Small Wins

    • Closing a loop is an achievement
    • Confetti isn't silly – it's positive reinforcement
    • Progress tracking creates momentum

Personal Growth

  1. Mental Health Tech is Deeply Personal

    • What helps one person might not help another
    • Avoid being prescriptive
    • Empower, don't dictate
  2. Scope Creep is Real

    • Started with "just a list"
    • Added AI, categories, commitments, mood tracking, breathing...
    • Learning when to say "v2"
  3. Documentation Matters

    • Future-you forgets context
    • Good docs = easier debugging
    • Write README like you're explaining to a friend

🚀 What's next for Open Loops

Short-term (Next 3 months)

1. Voice Input

Speak your loops instead of typing. When you're overwhelmed, even typing feels like effort.

🎤 "I need to reply to my professor about the deadline extension"
→ Instantly added as a loop

2. Pattern Recognition

AI analyzes your loops over time to identify patterns:

  • "You've postponed 'gym' 7 times this month. Want to talk about what's blocking you?"
  • "You tend to add loops late at night. Is anxiety keeping you awake?"

3. Weekly Insights

Visual dashboard showing:

  • Most common loop categories
  • Peak mental load times
  • Closure rate trends
  • Emotional patterns

Mid-term (6-12 months)

4. Collaborative Loops

Share specific loops with trusted people:

"Plan birthday party" → Shared with partner
→ Both can add tasks, mark complete
→ Mental load distributed

This addresses a real issue: Studies show women carry disproportionate mental load in relationships. Making it visible and shareable helps redistribute it.

5. Integration with Calendar & Tasks

  • ACT items → Auto-suggest calendar slots
  • Connect with Todoist, Google Tasks, Notion
  • Sync across productivity tools

6. Therapist Dashboard (Optional)

With user permission:

  • Share loop history with therapist
  • Identify thought patterns
  • Track progress between sessions

Privacy-first: All data stays local by default. Opt-in only.

Long-term Vision

7. Mobile App

Native iOS/Android app with:

  • Quick capture widget
  • Siri/Google Assistant integration
  • Offline sync

8. Community Features

  • Anonymous loop sharing ("You're not alone in feeling this")
  • Support groups for specific challenges
  • Peer encouragement

9. Research Partnership

Work with cognitive psychologists to:

  • Validate the four-category framework
  • Study effectiveness through controlled studies
  • Publish findings
  • Improve the methodology

Goal: Not just build a product, but contribute to understanding of mental load.

💝 Impact Potential

Who This Helps

  1. Students (our primary focus)

    • Juggling classes, social life, future planning
    • Often first time managing mental load independently
    • High rates of anxiety and burnout
  2. Working Professionals

    • Context switching between projects
    • Remembering follow-ups, meetings, tasks
    • Work-life balance stress
  3. Parents (especially mothers)

    • Managing household mental load
    • Invisible labor of remembering everything
    • Emotional labor of family coordination
  4. Anyone feeling overwhelmed

    • Anxiety disorders
    • ADHD (helps externalize thoughts)
    • Depression (small wins build momentum)

Measurable Outcomes

If widely adopted, we'd expect to see:

  • ↓ Self-reported anxiety levels
  • ↑ Task completion rates
  • ↑ Sense of control over life
  • ↓ Procrastination
  • ↑ Mental clarity

Alignment with Hackathon Theme

"Technology For Wellness" isn't about replacing human connection or self-care practices. It's about supporting them with thoughtful tools.

Open Loops embodies this by:

  • ✅ Human-first design (calm, encouraging, non-judgmental)
  • ✅ Solving root causes (not just symptoms)
  • ✅ Empowering users (not prescribing solutions)
  • ✅ Building healthy habits (closure creates momentum)
  • ✅ Reducing barriers (demo mode, simple UX)

🎨 Design Philosophy

The Name: "Open Loops"

In psychology, the Zeigarnik Effect describes how unfinished tasks occupy mental space more than completed ones. An open loop is an unresolved thought or task.

Our name acknowledges the problem directly. And our mission? Close those loops.

Visual Identity

  • Light, airy aesthetic → Creates breathing room
  • Serif fonts → Warm, personal, human
  • Soft pastels → Calm, not clinical
  • Subtle animations → Delightful, not distracting
  • Encouraging copy → Supportive, never pushy

We're not a medical app. We're a friendly companion.

💬 Final Thoughts

Mental health tech is deeply personal. What helps me might not help you. But I believe Open Loops offers something genuinely useful: a way to externalize, process, and close the invisible mental loops we all carry.

Not through meditation (though that's great).
Not through journaling (also valuable).
But through actually closing loops.

One less thing to remember.
One less thing to process.
One less thing taking up mental space.

That's the gift of closure.

And if this project helps even one person feel a little less overwhelmed, a little more in control, a little clearer...

It will have been worth building.

"Your mind is not a storage device. It's a processing unit. Let's help it process."
