Inspiration

Following the theme of ElleHacks, our team addressed the need for inclusivity and spaces for marginalized individuals to exist without harassment or discrimination is only increasing. With the political landscape of North America right now, it is essential for communities to uplift and help each other stay safe. SAIRFY works to streamline and optimize this process so that it is as accessible and informative as possible. A survey we conducted lead us to conclude there is a high level of interest for a program like this.

What it does

SAIRFY is an app where people can share their reviews of places and events based on how their different identities are received. If a venue is unwelcoming to a group of people, such as the LGBT community, SAIRFY allows users to warn each other about any danger. Alternatively, if a venue is welcoming, users are encouraged to express their satisfaction with it! The posters of reviews tag their reviews with their identities, and reviews are filtered this way. There is no need for readers to disclose personal information if they choose not to.

How we built it

Our team built the app with android studio. Before this weekend, app development seemed like a far-fetched goal, but after a few tutorials, we realized it was within our grasp. We polished our java skills, became familiar with XML, and wrangled the unwieldy program.

Challenges we ran into

Building the app was a challenge.None of the our group members knew Aandroid Studio, but with a bit of researching we were able to perform the basic abilities we envisioned our app to perform. With little experience in Android Studio, understanding where errors were coming from was also a challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This app prides itself on the idea of diversity and creating a space that is inclusive for everybody. Not only a space where everyone is welcome but a comfortable space for all walks of life.At the end of the day, everybody has different opinion based on their experience in society. With this app ,we hope users will experience a better version of Toronto when they visit restaurants, events ,shops etc.

What we learned

Building applications and designing graphics can be difficult for beginners, but the internet is filled with very accessible resources.

What's next for SAIRFY

The most important next step for SAIRFY is its continued development until the formatting matches the graphics planned for it. When the app is complete, SAIRFY would like to test its usability with a test group and fix any bugs. In the future, we'd like to implement a points based rewards system to encourage continued usage.
