Sahrak - Always by your side

Inspiration

The inspiration for Sahrak came from witnessing the daily struggles of our loved ones managing their wellness journey. We observed elderly family members forgetting medications, caregivers feeling overwhelmed with coordination tasks, and people with chronic conditions struggling to track their health effectively. The name "Sahrak" comes from Sanskrit, meaning "guardian companion," embodying our vision of creating a digital companion that's truly "always by your side."

In a world where the global mHealth apps market size was estimated at USD 37.5 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 86.37 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 14.8%, we recognized the immense opportunity to build something meaningful. However, most existing solutions focus on individual features rather than comprehensive care coordination. We wanted to bridge this gap by creating a holistic platform that brings together patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers in one seamless ecosystem.

The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the need for such solutions, with a 50% increase in downloads of health and wellness apps, reflecting growing interest in self-care and digital health management. We were inspired to create not just another health app, but a true digital guardian that understands the human touch is irreplaceable and technology should make it more accessible.

How we built it

Team & Approach

Our 6-member team tackled this ambitious project over just 3 weekends due to work and personal commitments during the 30-day hackathon period. We consisted of:

  • 3 Vibe Coders
  • 1 Go To Market Expert
  • 2 Business Analysts and Testers

Development Strategy

Requirements-First Approach: We began by extensively documenting requirements, architecture, and feature specifications. This comprehensive planning phase was crucial for maximizing our limited development time.

AI-Powered Development: Leveraging the free credits provided for Bolt.new, we achieved approximately 90% of our development through AI-assisted coding. This innovative approach allowed us to:

  • Rapidly prototype and iterate on features
  • Focus on user experience rather than low-level coding
  • Implement complex UI components efficiently
  • Maintain consistent code quality across the platform

Technology Stack:

  • Frontend: React.js with modern hooks and responsive design
  • Backend: Node.js with RESTful API architecture
  • Database: Supabase for real-time data synchronization
  • Authentication: Multi-factor authentication with role-based access
  • Security: End-to-end encryption for all PHI data
  • UI Framework: Custom component library optimized for elderly users

Development Process

  1. Weekend 1: Requirements gathering, architecture design, and UI/UX mockups
  2. Weekend 2: Core feature development using Bolt.new, database setup
  3. Weekend 3: Integration, testing, and real user feedback incorporation

Challenges we ran into

Technical Challenges

Supabase Integration Nightmare: Our biggest technical hurdle was the Supabase integration, which created numerous errors that even Bolt.new struggled to resolve. When we manually fixed some errors, Bolt would attempt to "fix" them again, creating infinite loops of debugging. This consumed nearly 40% of our development time and forced us to implement creative workarounds.

AI Code Generation Limitations: While Bolt.new was incredibly powerful, it occasionally generated code that worked in isolation but failed during integration. We had to develop a hybrid approach of AI generation followed by manual integration and testing.

Time Constraints vs. Feature Ambitions: With only 3 weekends available, we had to make tough decisions about feature prioritization. We originally planned to integrate blockchain for document validation and AI for predictive health insights, but ran out of time.

User Experience Challenges

Elderly User Interface Design: Creating an interface that's both feature-rich and elderly-friendly required multiple iterations. We had to balance functionality with simplicity, using larger buttons, high contrast colors, and intuitive navigation patterns.

Multi-User Permission Systems: Designing granular access controls for different types of caregivers (family members, doctors, nurses) while maintaining security and usability was complex.

Real-World Testing Integration: Incorporating feedback from actual users during our limited development timeframe required rapid iteration and feature adjustments.

Healthcare Domain Challenges

HIPAA Compliance: Ensuring all data handling met healthcare privacy standards while maintaining user-friendly features required careful architectural decisions.

Medical Data Accuracy: Building features like drug interaction checking and emergency medical information required extensive research and validation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Technical Achievements

90% AI-Generated Codebase: Successfully leveraging AI tools to build a comprehensive healthcare platform in just 3 weekends - demonstrating the future of rapid application development.

Real-Time Emergency System: Built a fully functional SOS system that can share location and medical information with emergency contacts instantly - a feature that could genuinely save lives.

Seamless Multi-User Experience: Created an elegant solution for complex permission management that allows family caregivers, healthcare providers, and patients to collaborate effectively.

Responsive Design Excellence: Achieved a truly responsive design that works equally well on smartphones for caregivers and tablets for elderly users.

User Impact Achievements

Real User Validation: Successfully alpha-tested the application with actual users and incorporated their feedback, proving the concept works in real-world scenarios.

Accessibility First: Built features specifically designed for elderly users, including large text, high contrast, and simplified navigation - addressing a often-overlooked demographic in healthcare apps.

Comprehensive Health Management: Created a single platform that replaces multiple disparate tools for medication management, appointment tracking, document storage, and caregiver communication.

Market Positioning Achievements

Identified Underserved Market: Positioned Sahrak in the rapidly growing healthcare app market that held the largest revenue share of 73.0% in 2024 and is expected to register the fastest CAGR over the forecast period.

Freemium Business Model: Developed a sustainable business model that provides essential features for free while monetizing advanced AI and blockchain features.

Partnership-Ready Platform: Built architecture that's ready for integration with healthcare providers, medical device companies, and government health programs.

What we learned

Technical Learnings

AI-Assisted Development is Game-Changing: We discovered that AI tools like Bolt.new can dramatically accelerate development when used strategically. The key is providing detailed requirements upfront and having skilled developers to handle integration challenges.

Database Integration Complexity: Real-time healthcare applications require robust database solutions. We learned the importance of database selection early in the architecture phase and the challenges of changing mid-development.

Healthcare App Security Requirements: Building for healthcare taught us about the critical importance of end-to-end encryption, audit trails, and compliance considerations that go far beyond typical web applications.

User Experience Learnings

Elderly Users Have Different Needs: Testing with elderly users revealed insights about button sizes, color contrast, and navigation patterns that dramatically differ from younger user preferences. This demographic requires specialized design consideration.

Caregiver Fatigue is Real: Family caregivers are often overwhelmed with information. Our design needed to focus on actionable insights rather than comprehensive data dumps.

Trust is Paramount in Healthcare: Users need clear understanding of data privacy, security measures, and who has access to their information before they'll engage with health platforms.

Business & Market Learnings

Healthcare Market Timing: The healthcare app market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with the market's expansion underpinned by a rising demand for digital health solutions that offer convenience, personalization, and accessibility.

Regulatory Landscape: Healthcare apps must navigate complex regulatory requirements (HIPAA, GDPR, FDA considerations) that significantly impact development timelines and architectural decisions.

Partnership Opportunities: The healthcare ecosystem values partnerships with providers, device manufacturers, and payers - building for integration from day one is crucial.
