Inspiration

Many students and low-income families in India miss out on scholarships, subsidies, and financial support simply because they are unaware of available schemes or do not understand the application process.

While researching the problem, I realized that information about government schemes is scattered across multiple websites, eligibility criteria are often confusing, and users are unsure about the documents required for applying. Even when people are eligible, they frequently fail to apply before deadlines.

This inspired me to build SahaySetu, a platform designed to simplify access to financial benefits by helping users discover relevant schemes, track required documents, and directly access official application portals.

What it does

SahaySetu is a fintech-focused web application that helps users:

  • Discover financial schemes they may be eligible for
  • View estimated savings and benefits
  • Understand required documents
  • Track application readiness using a checklist system
  • Access direct official application links

The platform focuses on reducing confusion and improving accessibility for students and financially vulnerable users.

How we built it

The project was developed as a lightweight prototype focused on usability and accessibility.

I designed a clean and mobile-friendly interface where users can enter basic details such as:

  • Age
  • Occupation
  • Income range
  • Education level
  • State -Religion -Category Based on these inputs, the system displays relevant government schemes and financial benefits.

A document checklist feature was added to improve practicality. Users can mark documents they already possess, and the app dynamically calculates their readiness percentage for applying to schemes.

The project also includes:

  • Real government scheme examples
  • Direct official application links
  • Estimated yearly savings
  • Progress indicators and reminders

The prototype was created using AI-assisted no-code development tools and focused heavily on user experience and clear workflow design.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing simplicity with usefulness.

Government schemes often have complex eligibility requirements, varying documentation needs, and different state-specific rules. Presenting this information in a simple and understandable way without overwhelming users was difficult.

Another challenge was ensuring the project remained practical and realistic within limited development time. Instead of attempting to build a large-scale backend system, I focused on creating a clear prototype that demonstrates how the platform would work in real-world usage.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully designed a practical fintech solution focused on improving access to financial benefits and government schemes.
    • Built a clean and user-friendly prototype that simplifies a complex and confusing process for users.
    • Integrated real government schemes with direct official links instead of using purely theoretical or placeholder examples.
    • Created an interactive document checklist and readiness tracking system to help users understand how prepared they are to apply.
    • Focused on accessibility and simplicity so that users with limited technical knowledge can still easily navigate the platform.
    • Developed a working prototype within limited time while keeping the solution realistic and implementation-focused.
    • Structured the project around real-world problems affecting students and financially vulnerable communities across India.

What we learned

Through this project, I learned:

  • The importance of financial accessibility and digital inclusion
  • How user experience design can simplify complex processes
  • How to structure real-world problem-solving into a practical product

What's next for SahaySetu

In the future, SahaySetu can be expanded with:

  • Smart deadline notifications
  • Real-time government scheme updates
  • AI-powered eligibility recommendations

The long-term vision is to make financial support systems more accessible, understandable, and actionable for everyone.
