Inspiration

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam that makes muslims closer to Allah and strengthen their Eman. Everyone should have the right to perform all rituals of Hajj despite any disabilities they have. However, pilgrims with special needs often face difficulties in specific rituals and require assistance. On the other hand, some able pilgrims/volunteers usually find themselves willing to offer a helping hand to the in need. However, both aren't able to connect through an easy and accessible channel.

Solution

Sahaby (صحابي) is a location based social search mobile app that connects willing pilgrims to individuals with special needs that require assistance through out a specific ritual. The platform matches volunteers with pilgrims with disabilities based on different criteria including language, preferences and the ritual in which they meet.

What it does

It matches pilgrims with special needs to other pilgrims who are willing to offer their help through a location based social search mobile application.

How we built it

Native mobile applications for both android and IOS platforms are implemented using the framework ReactNative. Backend of the application is implemented using the PHP framework Laravel.

Challenges we faced

Understanding our users best and wha they truly need and relating our application to them. Since the target persona is diverse in nationality, culture and age, finding the best experience for all of them posed a challenge. Other problems we face were technical, different implementations were considered in terms of the matching algorithm and what is the most efficient approach

What's next for Sahaby

Working on more features to increase the revenue stream so that the app can sustain itself as well as produce profit. The application can also be extended to include the season of Ummrah as well as cover the any act or volunteering across different fields or the pilgrimages of other religions.
