Inspiration Most AI tools today are built for people who already understand technology. But a huge section of India — street vendors, small shop owners, parents, elders — are left out because information is too complex or not in their language. We wanted to test whether Google Gemini could be used not to sound smart, but to explain things simply. The idea was straightforward: Can AI behave like a helpful neighbor instead of a technical expert? That question led to Sahaay AI.
What it does Sahaay AI is a multilingual community assistant that helps everyday users with: Understanding government schemes Getting simple business advice for small shops Basic education support General problem-solving in Tamil, Hindi, and English The focus is not depth or advanced analytics — it is clarity, simplicity, and accessibility. Users can ask questions in their own language and receive step-by-step, easy-to-understand responses.
How we built it We built Sahaay AI using Google Gemini via Google AI Studio as the core intelligence layer. Gemini is guided using a carefully designed system prompt that enforces: Simple language Multilingual responses Social-good–oriented answers We tested and refined prompts directly in Google AI Studio The assistant logic was wrapped in a lightweight web interface for demo purposes This project intentionally avoided unnecessary complexity — the goal was to show effective use of Gemini, not overengineering.
Challenges we ran into Model selection confusion: Not all Gemini models behave the same, and choosing the right one mattered. Over-verbosity: Gemini tends to explain too much unless constrained properly. Language tone control: Getting responses that sound natural in regional languages required prompt iteration. Scope discipline: The temptation to add features was high, but focus was necessary given the hackathon time limit.
Accomplishments that we're proud of Successfully using Google Gemini to generate clear, non-technical explanations Delivering meaningful output in multiple Indian languages Building a tool that solves a real problem, not a hypothetical one Completing a working prototype within a tight overnight timeline No gimmicks — the system works as intended.
What we learned AI is only as good as the instructions you give it Prompt engineering is not magic — it’s logic, testing, and iteration Simplicity is harder than complexity Using AI for social good requires restraint, not more features Most importantly, we learned that Gemini can be a practical assistant, not just a content generator.
What's next for Sahaay AI – Community Assistant If continued beyond the hackathon: Expand language support to more regional languages Add voice input/output for non-literate users Integrate verified government data sources Deploy as a lightweight mobile-first app Only features that improve accessibility will be added — nothing else.
