Inspiration

Every day our heads fill up with dozens of thoughts, tasks and finds. They usually end up in one long list of notes or in voice memos to ourselves. Sorting them by hand is a second job nobody has time for. So the notes pile up as dead weight: everything is technically saved, but none of it gets used. We wanted what you write down to stop just sitting there and start working for you.

What it does

  • One feed for everything. Type a note or add a photo, video or file. It feels like a chat with yourself: zero decisions at the moment of capture.
  • Threads assign themselves. In the background, every entry gets a category and a thread without asking anything of you.
  • Sorting on a tap. When you're ready, tap "Sort threads" on the next tab, and the magic happens: new entries land in their threads, and if a new topic has appeared, a new thread is created.
  • An insight, not a list. Inside a thread you don't see raw entries but their meaning: the AI retells what keeps repeating and what you keep coming back to.
  • Insight history. Every sort refreshes the insight while earlier versions are kept, so you can see how your thinking on a topic has changed.

How we built it

We started with research: 5 competitors (mymind, Mem, Capacities, Saner, Second Brain), a UX audit of two of them against Nielsen's heuristics, three personas and interviews. The key finding: every competitor processes an entry the moment it's saved. None of them has a separate "saved, but not yet made sense of" state. That gave us a two-level model: instant background categorization plus a deliberate sort on a tap. Then came the PRD, sitemap, wireframes, a design system in Figma and ASO.

The app is built with Swift and SwiftUI. Entries are stored locally in SwiftData and synced through iCloud. Categorization and insights are powered by Gemini. Sage Plus subscriptions run on RevenueCat.

Challenges we ran into

  • Keeping auto-categorization from turning into a "second job": if the AI is often wrong, people leave.
  • Stopping the archive from becoming the same pile, just with labels.
  • Explaining clearly that notes go to a cloud AI only for the duration of the analysis.

What we learned

What bothers people isn't when the AI sorts, but whether sorting demands their attention in the moment. That interview finding shaped the whole product architecture.

What's next for Sage

AI chat inside a thread (ask questions about your own notes), thread export, and confirmation before deleting.
