Inspiration
How can we make navigating the city of Chicago safer?
- ~20% of students walk to school every morning
- Total Violent Crimes in Chicago: 904
- Sun-Times counted 241 homicides this year
- Chicago Tribune reported that CPD solved one in every 20 shootings
What it does
- Give people the tools to make data-driven decisions!
- Highlight routes/areas in a commute that may be dangerous
- Pull info from social media about crimes that are happening in real-time
- People can post in real-time about the crimes in the city
How I built it
Data:
- Twitter API -City of Chicago Datasets Software:
- Flutter/Dart
- Python/Flask
- Twitter API
- Chicago Data Portal
Challenges I ran into
- Rendering Map onto the screen with crimes
- Preprocessing the data and merging it with multiple sources
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- Creating an application that has the potential to help the citizens of Chicago no matter what their age is!
What I learned
- How to use the Chicago Data Portal
- Lack of Information that Citizens have about the city
What's next for SafeWay
- Notifications
- Text Messaging updates
- Integrate ML to analyze crime patterns
- Filter Results (Date, Topic, etc)
- Integrate NewsDataScraper (https://pypi.org/project/newsdatascraper/)
- Create a web application to sign up for simple updates
- Use React-Bloc (https://www.npmjs.com/package/@felangel/react-bloc)
