Safe Walk – Your AI-Powered Night Companion
Inspiration
Walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas, can be unsettling—particularly for women and students. I’ve often found myself holding my phone tightly, sharing my live location with friends, or walking fast in fear. This constant anxiety inspired me to build Safe Walk — a smart, AI-powered mobile companion that ensures you’re never truly alone on your way home.
How We Built It
I used Bolt.new to rapidly prototype and build the React Native front-end of the app with Expo. Here’s how I broke it down:
~Map & Navigation Integration using Expo + Google Maps API.
~Panic Button & Emergency Alerts that notify selected contacts instantly.
~AI-based Route Safety Estimation (using placeholder logic to simulate real-time risk assessment).
~Voice Assistant Integration (future scope) to enable hands-free SOS features.
What I Learned
~How to structure and deploy a React Native project using Bolt and Expo.
~How to integrate real-time features like geolocation and alerts in a mobile app.
~Basics of creating a mobile-first UX that feels intuitive and comforting.
~Importance of solving real-world problems with empathy and technology.
Challenges Faced
~Expo Go Compatibility: At one point, the project wouldn’t open in Expo Go due to version mismatches, which led me to use alternative tools like Snack for deployment.
~Time Constraints: Building and polishing everything in limited time while learning on the go was challenging but rewarding.
~AI Features: Implementing smart alerts and safety analysis logic without full backend support meant using simulated data to represent real scenarios.
What’s Next?
~Implementing real-time crowdsourced danger zone updates.
~Integrating with local law enforcement APIsor emergency hotlines.
~Adding gesture-based triggers and voice command activation for emergency mode
Final Thoughts
Safe Walk was born out of a personal need and has the potential to impact anyone who’s ever felt unsafe walking alone. Technology can do more than entertain—it can protect, reassure, and empower. I’m excited to keep building on this vision.
