The app will run in the background and use the smartphone's camera to detect when the user starts crossing a road (it will detect the sidewalk suddenly becoming a road) and either vibrate strongly or shortly flash the screen 2-3 times. Thus the user will know when to look up, and he will look at the road and cross it consciously. This way we will significantly reduce the number of collisions between pedestrians and cars by making the pedestrians more aware of their environment.
The app will work only if the screen is turned on and the user is moving (according to the phone's accelerometer or GPS). This could be changed in the settings according to the user's preferences, though.
The app could have a cool motto such as "Better lose a moment in life than lose life in a moment".
You might think battery is an issue because it will drain the user's battery, but this is a minor issue because: a. There are places where you can charge your phone everywhere in NYC b. Your life is more important than your phone's battery.
I apologize I did not program this app. I would have done that if I had known how to program. Since I only have an idea there's nothing I can show in a video either. I thought my idea could be helpful anyway and save some pedestrians' life if it will be implemented, and I will be glad if somebody who knows how to code will make this app even if I don't win anything.
