Inspiration
Nearly 50% of women feel unsafe simply walking home alone at night. For me, my grandmother taught me to carry a safety pin with me at all times. Whether it be in my pocket or attached to my clothes as she does to her saree, I grew up with this shiny reflection traveling with us every, and this inspired our team to create SafetyPin.
What it does
SafetyPin allows users to place pins and report any and all unsafe incidents that have occured at a specific location. This promotes awareness and prepardness as it shows saftey reports and ratings for each region.
How we built it
We used React, React-Native, JavaScript, Expo, Leaflet, and VS Code to have a map and reporting features.
Challenges we ran into
A few challenges include getting started and setting up our enviroment since we decided to go with an app. For this we had to learn all the React and React-Native syntax from scratch. After this, with each feature, like buttons, we had to do extensive testing. Linking pages and emulating the app on a device also challenged us greatly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Though we started with many challenges, we are proud of creating our very first app and all the knowledge we gained along the way.
What we learned
We learned a lot more on the syntax for React and React-Native. With this we learned how to code the different features, like buttons, navigation and UI/UX.
What's next for SafetyPin
We have quite a few future plans for SafetyPin including a forum feature for users to further discuss details to promote saftey. Along with this we want to create filters to allow for better user experience.
