Inspiration

We aim to help in changing the curve of the COVID-19 outbreak while returning to our everyday lives. Social distancing has been imposed by governments to fight against COVID-19. Businesses are gradually reopening and they have to limit the number of visitors. Assigning a physical person to count the people flow is not efficient and not safe.

Covid 19 has significantly altered our everyday life. Worldwide, the contamination rate has been soaring, while businesses are shut down with irrecoverable losses leading to potential long term consequences.

In the aftermath of the first waves, and of the spread and havoc caused, our next challenge in this context of no current cure, is the coexistence with the virus.

What it does

We found a quick and easy solution. Safety Check is a small traffic light counter limiting the number of visitors in stores and public spaces

We will provide businesses and public places with a practical yet pivotal tool allowing them to count and monitor the number of customers or visitors entering and exiting the premises.

How it works

Our Safety check device will work similarly to a traffic light with a real-time count, including an alarm and a stop sign whenever the limit capacity is reached. Additionally, there is also a screen displaying the number of visitors currently inside and the limit capacity (in red).

Our Safety Check device requires 3 minutes of installation time and is very simple to use. Essentially, a dashboard indicates the key figures, with the possibility to modify the current amounts and the threshold level (+ or -) as well as a reset button.

In summary :

  • Real-time count occupancy in stores or public places
  • Displaying the limit and number of the current visitors
  • Alert with a ringtone when the limit has been reached
  • Display STOP until the counter returns below the limit

How we built it

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform that combines both open source software and hardware to let us create an mvp with ease. The Arduino language is merely a set of C/C++ functions We used Tinkercad Autodesk to create our mvp with a 3D design for the case, the electronic design. We coded the instructions to have a functional electronic circuit. Using this platform provided us with a real time simulation before building the product in real life. Target

We firstly plan to target super and hypermarkets (>400m²) in Brussels (150 shops) which only represents 6% of the belgian market. We will then expand to the flemish (1600 shops) and walloon (950 shops) regions which represent a significantly bigger market. We’ll possibly adjust or widen our target market (Libraries, museums, ...) depending on the results of our first strategy.

Financial plan

According to our supplier partner which is ready to apply special covid discounts on our prototype, the conception and designing costs should range between 450€ and 550€/unit. In our cash flow forecast, we aren’t taking into account the economies of scale that will occur, once we’ll reach a higher level of production. With a 999€ market price, we can ensure a significant profit on a 6 month basis, under the assumption of a geometric growth of supermarkets/clients willing to implement our safety check device. Impacts

IMPACT #1 : Health & prevention In the absence of a vaccin, social distancing remains currently the most effective way to cope with this pandemic.

IMPACT #2 : Business continuity Counting and limiting people will help businesses abide by the regulations set by respective governments in terms of capacity limits of visitors or customers consequently keeping their employees and customers safe

IMPACT #3 : Social education Educate and raise awareness amongst people regarding the necessity to respect social distancing rules in public places and the importance to integrate those safety habits into our daily life.

During the hackathon

To Do List :

  • Finish the MVP design
  • State the technical requirements
  • Find the optimal product market fit
  • Product compliance with regulations

The Team :

  • Ilias : Technical operations
  • Djibril : Financial operations
  • Yanis : Strategy and Operations Manager

Missions :

  • Finish the MVP design → The team
  • State the technical requirements, code & circuit design → Ilias
  • Find the optimal product market fit → Yanis & Djibril
  • Product compliance with regulations → Yanis & Djibril

Results at the end of the hackathon

  • We finished the MVP & design of our product
  • We already have a supplier partner based in Brussels which is about to validate our MVP and launch the conception of the prototype. The aim is to reduce production costs and provide us with technological expertise.
  • During this hackathon, we had the opportunity to meet important stakeholders in the area like the CTO of Arduino who is supporting us in our venture.
  • We determined the optimal market penetration strategy in order to stay aligned with the health priorities to cope with the virus, but also to ensure a viable development for our product.

What we are planning to do next

  • Finish the final version of the product and launch manufacturing
  • Verify the product compliance with european and domestic regulations (environmental, safety, etc.)
  • Liaise with supermarkets and hypermarkets in Brussels to sell them our device.
  • Find support at the political level in order to eventually benefit from financial and strategic support, as well as regulatory advisory.
