The SafeBuddy Story

The Inspiration The idea for SafeBuddy was born out of a stark reality: for many women and students, the journey home after dark is often accompanied by a constant sense of hyper-vigilance. Whether it's a late-night study session at college or a long commute from work, generic navigation apps focus on the fastest route, not necessarily the safest one. We wanted to build something that didn't just provide directions, but provided a digital safety net.

Building the Solution We designed SafeBuddy to be a proactive tool rather than a reactive one. The core architecture focuses on three pillars: Visibility, Community, and Speed.

  • Real-Time Monitoring: We implemented live trip sharing so that trusted contacts can track progress in real-time.
  • The Safe-Map Algorithm: We developed a community-driven tagging system. If $n$ users mark a location as "well-lit" or "secure," its safety rating increases, whereas "danger" pins alert others to avoid specific spots.
  • Emergency Response: The one-tap SOS was designed for zero-friction interaction during high-stress moments.

Challenges & Learning One of the greatest technical challenges was balancing location accuracy with battery efficiency. Continuous GPS tracking can drain a phone’s battery rapidly—an unacceptable risk for someone traveling late at night. We learned to optimize the frequency of location pings based on the user's velocity $v$ and distance $d$ from the destination, ensuring the app remains active throughout the entire journey. Furthermore, we had to tackle the human element: data privacy. We had to ensure that live location data is encrypted and only accessible to the specific contacts the user chooses, for a limited duration.

Impact SafeBuddy is more than an app; it’s a commitment to urban mobility. By turning individual experiences into community intelligence, we are making the streets feel smaller and the world feel a little bit safer.
