SafeTrip helps travelers check for unsafe flight routes by analyzing airspace alerts and conflict zones so they can fly safer with the right airline, layover, or route.

Inspiration

The idea for SafeTrip came from a recently canceled trip. I was supposed to fly to Georgia (the country), but rising tensions from the Israel-Iran conflict made me second-guess. Flights were operational, but eventually, many tourists were stranded, with return flights getting canceled. Around the same time, a major Indian airline crash hit global headlines. I realized then that **travel safety isn’t just an option but a priority.

What It Does

SafeTrip is a web app that lets you check if your flight route passes near any current conflict zones so you can make informed decisions before you travel. You simply enter:

  • Departure city
  • Destination
  • Airline
  • Travel date And the app:
  • Maps your expected flight path
  • Checks if it comes within 500 km of any conflict zone
  • Warns you with clear alerts and safety suggestions

How We Built It

  • Frontend: Designed a landing page using HTML/CSS/JS, deployed on Netlify
  • Backend: Built with Streamlit + Python, hosted on Streamlit Cloud
  • Data Layer:
    • News articles were web scraped for conflict zones, these countries were appended into a JSON file
    • GeoPy + Shapely was used to calculate distances between your route and conflict areas
  • AI Integration: Used OpenAI to fetch coordinates dynamically
  • Deployment: Connected via Netlify for the UI and Streamlit for logic

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Handling OpenAI API rate limits and securing API keys during deployment
  • Building an app that looks good and works smoothly across platforms
  • Lack of access to real-time aviation data without expensive APIs

  • Turned a real-world problem into a functional, helpful travel tool
