SafeTravels
A key problem that exists in low-wage, migratory labor for a number of industries (child care, construction, agriculture, etc.) is that potential workers may be approached by any number of brokers and those job seekers have no way of verifying that a broker is legitimate and that what they are proposing is safe.
One often hears stories of workers accepting jobs in say, construction or child care, in a different country along common migratory paths (e.g., Filipinos working in Saudi Arabia) only to then disappear when they arrive at the destination country. Their friends or family members may worry about them but the data about what happened is lost.
SafeTravels aims to massively reduce the size of the potentially exploitable population and improve data on migrant labor by creating a revolutionary platform that:
- Allows legitimate brokers to list their businesses and open jobs
- Allows job seekers with legal papers to search for brokers offering jobs in different countries and categories
- Importantly, allows workers to indicate that they have accepted a job through a broker AND to opt-in to GPS tracking and automatic alert generation if they do not check in within a specified period of time. These alerts could be sent to family members and friends specified by the worker-user as well as to law enforcement in origin and destination countries as well as Interpol
- Includes security measures such as the creation of a "duress password" that a worker could use to trigger an invisible alarm if they are in dangerous situation and being forced to "check in"
- Allows law enforcement to view alerts as they are generated in mobile and web-based UIs
Through the above features, brokers that move people across borders will automatically be given a "Safe Travels Score" based on the number of workers that they have moved, whether any of them have generated alerts, and the amount of time they have been on the site.
Through SafeTravels, job seekers all over the world will have an alternative to simply trusting a broker that approaches them. Check-ins provide a benefit to individual workers and provide valuable actionable information to other workers and law enforcemet.
SafeTravels consists of an Android app, a Vue-based web UI, and a scalable backend.
