Inspiration
Mental health is often stigmatized, and not everyone feels comfortable opening up to others. I wanted to build a safe and friendly space where users could express their emotions anonymously and receive gentle, empathetic responses at any time.
What it does
- SafeTalk is an AI-powered mobile app that lets users:
- Select their current mood (sad, anxious, happy, meh)
- Engage in natural, comforting conversations with an AI companion
- Express their feelings freely, without fear or judgment
- Feel heard and supported at any moment of the day
How we built it
- Frontend: Developed using React Native with Expo for rapid prototyping.
- AI Integration: Used the GPT-3.5-turbo model via OpenAI's API to provide emotionally intelligent responses.
- Chat Logic: Built a custom conversation flow that remembers previous user messages and adapts the AI's tone accordingly.
Challenges we ran into
Emotional Tone Tuning: Getting the AI to sound warm and supportive without being overly generic or clinical.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
Prompt design is everything when it comes to creating empathetic AI. Building tech for mental wellness requires deep empathy and thoughtful defaults.
What's next for SafeTalk
- Add voice input for a more natural way to express feelings
- Night mode to reduce eye strain and improve comfort at night
- Mood tracking over time to help users reflect on emotional patterns
