Inspiration
We were inspired by the theme of HackViolet in general, to help women in obstacles they face through their safety and security. We want to inspire women to connect with each other and build a community to watch out for others' safety, whether it be any family or friends.
What it does
Our app is an app to protect women (or anybody) from the hazards of harassment, crime, violence, etc. and to provide awareness to the public of dangers women face in the public when walking alone. Our goal is to provide a safe space for people to share their thoughts and experiences in live locations and provide insight to others where and when places are the most hazardous.
How we built it
We built our app through collaboration in Figma.
Challenges we ran into
The features we wanted to add were too complex for the project. This would make it confusing to the user, so we have simplified the buttons and functions to make it easier to navigate. One of the hardest design functions we had was designing the colors. We decided on a simple monotone color scheme after testing many color schemes because it put more emphasis on each function and button. Each button serves a purpose, and the many different colors took away from the visual balance as well as importance of use.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the ideas we have created, even though many were already made. Adding features, functions, and simple UI was something that brought the piece together to bring attention to the real problems women face in public, so users could easily look at the content, like posts without getting easily distracted.
What we learned
We learned to brainstorm and add our ideas together. Sometimes, there were complications on what all of us wanted, but once we had the project together and we saw it with our own eyes, it was easier to agree upon changes.
What's next for SafeSteps
make this app available offline or can work in very low connectivity of network, gps focus more. Our next steps are to make the app available offline or in low network connectivity. Our app focuses on location, so the focus would be GPS, privacy, and keeping users anonymous through a high level of security. Releasing this app will allow not just women, but anyone to keep track of each other and even give people who are alone a safe environment.
