Inspiration
Traditional navigation apps prioritise speed, not safety. We were inspired by the countless moments people feel uneasy walking alone—poorly lit streets, unfamiliar neighborhoods, unexpected crime hotspots, or simply the uncertainty of not knowing whether a route is truly safe. We wanted to build a tool that doesn’t just get you home fast, but gets you home safely. SafeSteps was born from that need: a smarter, safety-first approach to navigation.
What it does
SafeSteps provides personalised, safety-optimised routes using real-time data and community insights. Instead of sending users down isolated alleys or poorly lit shortcuts, it evaluates multiple safety factors to ensure every journey feels more secure. Key features include:
Street Light Availability – Highlights well-lit paths along your route.
Crime Rate Analysis – Uses up-to-date crime statistics to avoid high-risk areas.
Police Station Proximity – Shows the nearest police stations or emergency services for added reassurance.
How we built it
We engineered SafeSteps using Dijkstra’s algorithm to compute optimal paths while factoring in safety-based weights.
We created intelligent nodes representing key environmental and safety conditions.
Routes are color-coded based on danger levels for easy visualisation.
We integrated data related to street lighting, crime statistics, transportation hubs, and police station proximity.
What's next for Safesteps
We're committed to expanding and refining SafeSteps with exciting future enhancements:
Mobile App with Live Location for dynamic, real-time route updates.
Voice-Over Navigation for hands-free guidance.
Bilingual Support to make SafeSteps accessible to users across diverse communities.
More granular safety metrics, including environmental sensors and crowd-sourced alerts.
