Inspiration
The alarming rates of intimate partner violence, especially among young people, with high risks of suicide and health issues, inspired the creation of our app. It aims to provide support, resources, and a lifeline to those affected, addressing a pressing societal concern.
What it does
Our app is designed to assist teenagers experiencing dating violence. It provides them with the ability to call for emergency assistance, report abusive activities, access a safety plan when needed, and communicate with authorities to ensure their protection and peace of mind.
How we built it
We code out the entire app using React Native framework.
Challenges we ran into
Our team initially had five members from different time zones, but three became unresponsive during the hackathon. Only Xuan You and Carlos worked on the project, drastically altering our plans. Both sacrificed sleep, coding for over 20 hours straight, to keep Safespace on track. This experience highlighted the importance of adaptability and dedication in overcoming unexpected challenges during a hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are immensely proud of the accomplishments we achieved during this hackathon, considering the constraints of having only two team members and a limited amount of time. Despite these challenges, we were able to develop an almost complete application that incorporates several essential functions. The journey was undoubtedly exhausting, with late nights and intense problem-solving, but we firmly believe that the results will prove to be exceptionally rewarding. We look forward to sharing the results of our hard work and innovation with the hackathon community and believe that our project has the potential to make a significant impact.
What's next for SafeSpace
Future plans for SafeSpace include implementing an emergency quiz to assess user knowledge, enabling video and story uploads for interactive content, and incorporating voice recognition for emergency reports when phones are inaccessible.
